- Description:
- Mack Francis Mattingly (1931 - ) served one term in the U.S. Senate from 1980-1986. The Republican senator's issues were trade and taxes, and he lost re-election in 1986. Mattingly was appointed U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of the Seychelles by President Bush in 1992. He made another unsuccessful bid for the U.S. Senate in 2000. He now resides on St. Simons Island, Georgia.; Interviewed by Dr. Mel Steely and Professor Ted Fitzsimmons of the History Department on January 15th, 1992 (probably at the UWG-TV studio).; Dr. Steely begins by mentioning that a similar interview had been conducted with Mattingly five years prior and asks Mattingly how it is he had been appointed as assistant secretary-general for defense support for NATO. Mattingly gives details about the position, describing the responsibilities it entailed and discussing NATO's involvement with the Soviet Union and the toppling of the Berlin Wall. Mattingly then goes into a lengthy commentary on the defense system of the United States as well as armament policies of NATO.Mattingly discusses into his return from NATO, when he became involved with Johnny Isakson's campaign for GA governor in 1990, which was lost to Zell Miller. In 1991, Mattingly decided to run against Wyche Fowler for a Senate seat; he describes his campaign, why it failed, and why he ultimately withdrew from the race in 1992. He considered running for Lindsey Thomas's seat in 1992; at the time of this interview, he admits to being still undecided on whether he will run. Mattingly states that his motivations and goals are much as they had been five years prior, providinghis opinion on political outliers such as Pat Buchanan, calling him irrelevant (as he had considered J.B. Stoner and David Duke to be).
