- John James "Jack" Flynt Jr. (1914-2007) was elected the 4th District Congressman in 1954 and didn't retire from politics until 1979. He twice beat newcomer Newt Gingrich in the 1970s for his congressional seat. Flynt chaired the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct while a congressman.; Former Congressional Representative Flynt spoke at a civic engagement for the Carrollton Lions Club on March 3, 1998. In the second portion of the recording, Dr. Mel Steely visits Congressman Flynt at his home in Griffin, GA.; Flynt begins by greeting the audience and introducing his wife of fifty-seven years, Patty Flynt, stating that he was happy to be back in Carrollton with the Lion's Club. He expresses his gratitude for the friends that have supported him in his political campaigns since 1954, through the primary and general election of 1976. He expresses his love for Carroll County and its towns. Flynt goes on to discuss the death of Albert Sidney Camp in 1954, whose position in the U.S. House of Representatives had been left vacant; he qualified to run to for the position. He speaks about his memories with regard to the race and the influence of Carroll County in the election. He speaks of his constantly changing body of constituents, which were changing due to redistricting and reapportionment from 1962 onwards. Flynt discusses his decision to retire in 1976 and his wife's reaction. He talks about how his time in office affected his family, his children's schooling and both the advantages and the hardships involved. He then speaks of his family's membership with the Methodist Church and his marriage in 1932. Flynt the goes on to speak more of Carroll County, Judge William C. Adamson and the Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce. He closes by once again by thanking the Lions Club, Carroll County residents and his friend Barbara for their support. The second segment of the video includes Mel Steely's visit to Flynt's home in Griffin, GA - the fourth house that Flynt lived at in Griffin. Flynt goes into detail about his family's different homes, one of which stands about five hundred feet from his current home on West Poplar Street.
