- Description:
- John James "Jack" Flynt Jr. (1914-2007) was elected the 4th District Congressman in 1954 and didn't retire from politics until 1979. He twice beat newcomer Newt Gingrich in the 1970s for his congressional seat. Flynt chaired the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct while a congressman.; Interviewed by professors Dr. Donald Wagner of the Political Science Department and Professor Ted Fitzsimmons of the History Department on May 5, 1987 in the Education Center of West Georgia College.; Flynt begins by recounting his family history in Georgia from as far back as the 1780s and into the Civil War. He speaks of his paternal grandfather's participation in Company G of the 19th Georgia Infantry of the Confederate Army, which had been part of Archer's Brigade. Flynt then speaks of his maternal great-grandfather who practiced medicine had attended the University of West Georgia along with other notable Georgians. He then gives details of both of his parent's immediate families and outlines the education and political and legal career of his father, John James Flynt, Sr., as well as the education of his mother. Flynt outlines his own education (recounting his most influential teachers from as early as first grade through his college career), his pursuit of a degree in law, and his entrance into the armed forces in 1936. He discusses his family's church participation and his involvement with sports and extracurricular activities while in school as a young man. Flynt then talks about the Great Depression and its economic and emotional impact on his family, his community, and the university that he attended. He speaks at length on his time in law school at the University of Georgia and George Washington University as well as about the people that he had met and worked with while there. [Segment missing on Disc-2 regarding Flynt's years serving in WWII until 1945.] Flynt speaks about what he believes to be the need for the military strength of the U.S. and his stance on the U.S. involvement in WWII, the Korean War, etc. He then speaks of his campaign for the House of Representatives just a few months after his return from the war. He links his campaign for Speaker Pro Tempore, and his own attempts to pass resolution JSR1, to Georgia's "Three Governors Crisis" of 1947 that had occurred concurrently, concluding that Georgia history would have been much different had it not been for his vote on that particular matter. Flynt ends the discussion by divulging the nuances of his loyalty regarding both the Russell and Talmadge families.
