- Description:
- Robert Laurence "Bob" Barr was born November 5, 1948 in Iowa City, Iowa, but spent much of his childhood living in foreign countries including Pakistan, Panama, and Iran due to his father's civil engineering career. He earned a law degree from Georgetown University in 1977, and worked for the CIA during much of the 1970's. In 1986 Barr was appointed by President Reagan as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. After several unsuccessful attempts at elective office he won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994 from Georgia's 7th District. He served as a Republican in Congress until 2003 and was known as one of the most conservative members, though a strong supporter of civil liberties. He is probably best known for his role as one of the House managers during the Clinton impeachment trial. Since leaving Congress, Barr has been a strong critic of the Bush Administration and the Patriot Act, and in 2006 changed his political affiliation to the Libertarian Party. In May 2008 Barr was nominated as the Libertarian Party's candidate for president.; Interviewed by Mel Steely on January 14, 2000 at the University of West Georgia.; Dr. Steely opens the interview with a discussion on the 1998 election with Jim Williams, as well as the governor race of that year. This leads to a discussion on party majority politics in Georgia, including gubernatorial, house, and congressional elections during the 1990s. Barr talks about his respect for Newt Gingrich and his participation as a representative for the state of Georgia, and they talk about his contributions as Speaker. They move into a discussion of what kind of issues are important to approach in Georgia and what could be the differences between successful election. Dr. Steely asks Barr his opinions on how well the administration is handling the "War on Drugs," as well as his views on the president. The second half of the interview begins with Bob Barr's reflections on leadership. In regards to the official language of the government, Barr says he believes in the foundations of America's unity that existed at the nation's inception. He also talks about Clinton's presidency and Congressional actions during his time in office, including reforms. The interview then shifts to issues such as air quality in Atlanta, and Barr's efforts to pass a bill to solve the issue. The interview concludes with questions about how the next presidential administration would handle these types of issues between presidents and Congress.
