FRESHMAN

Fall! The campus, idle for a time, begins to buzz with
bewildered freshmen. They who have been accustomed to
living in a limited family are now to become members of
West Georgia's wide "family group." Honorable sophomores
initiate "Rats" in fine style with the faculty to the rescue
with the first formal to welcome new students. Classes be-
gin and still-wondering frosh learn what work really is. One
good time after another balanced with hard work. Sports,
new clubs and old, books, unheard-of studies capture the
minds of the freshmen crop. Holidays. Each time they
grow more eager to return. Now full-fledged members of W.
G. C. they sense that they belong, that they have found their
place. New facts, new faces, new friends, have all been learned.
All too soon '41 -'42 is over and with sad hearts the "soph-
omores-to-be" leave with vivid memories of their first year of
college!

JUNIOR!

SEAGRAVES, PHILLIPS, POPHAM.

The third year teacher program is based upon the belief that many of the
southern problems can be solved and will be solved by the rural teacher through the
rural schools. With this in mind, the junior class students are bearing mw responsi-
bilities that will enable them to begin in the building of a new era in the South.

This third year of work has been made possible by Rosenwald Aid and Knight
Templars scholarships. A select group has been obtained for this work.

The type of work the junior student docs is paralleled to that of the child in the
laboratory schools, but at a college level of growth. Each student's background of
experience is kept in mind and he is helped to keep that which is his own strength,
color and beauty. At the same time, the student moves toward a solution of real
problems in nutrition, general health, human relationships with all group levels, edu-
cation procedures in schools, community study and organization, cooperative enter-
prises, art, literature, music, crafts, and religion.

Thus, with such a variety of experiences, these future teachers gain much to
contribute to the future schools.

Forum and panel discussions have been the rule for the Debate Club this year.
Members have been particularly active in the educational phase of the Civilian De-
fense program. They have appeared before various campus organizations and con-
ducted discussions of great importance on the war issues. They have aided the Social
Science Department in conducting a series of lectures and discussions on the "War
Background and Related Issues." This series ran from February until late May, and
was a weekly feature on the campus. Faculty members and students alike attended in
large numbers. Dr. Clark and Professor Hodges were in charge of the program.

BOYS'

Coach John Carpenter, born in Ashland, Alabama,
received his education at Alabama Polytechnic In-
stitute, majoring in Social Science and Physical Ed-
ucation.

After graduation he came to Georgia and taught
Physical Education at Greenville High School. Upon

leaving Greenville he became instructor of Physical
Education at Douglasville High School. During his
five years stay at the tv/o high schools, he won 103
out of 122 basketball games played.

Because of his capability and wide knowledge of
recreational programs he was made head of the
Physical Education Department of West Georgia
College.

Coach Carpenter has undoubtedly been outstand-
ing in his system of athletic training.

About thirty Braves answered Coach Carpenter's
call to action, and started a winning season by
downing Southern Union 39 to 20 for their first
home game.

Because of an accident that put an excellent
guard, Herbert Bice, out of action, and college reg-
ulations that eliminated some of the other best
players, the Braves were forced to bow to sixteen
opponents out of twenty-two. However, the Braves
fought hard in every game. Realizing they were
out-classed the Braves still fought with determination
to win, demonstrating sportsmanship that would be
a credit to any college.

The most outstanding players for the 1941-42
season were Captain Roy McGraw with a total of
194 points; Roy Malcolm, Roy Whitener, and Her-
bert Bice with 147, 117, and 108 points respect-
ively.

Manager W. R. "Sunshine" Chancey did an ex-
cellent job in keeping the morale of the team at
a high level.

Coach Ruth Sturgis, Director of Physical Education
for Women at West Georgia College, was born in
Rock Hill, South Carolina. She attended Winthrop
College in Rock Hill, and was graduated from
Louisiana State University. While doing her grad-
uate work at L. S. U. she was instructor in Physical
Education. After leaving there she became director
of Physical Education at LaGrange College, La-
Grange, Georgia. Realizing the importance of phy-
sical fitness which determines to a large degree the
keeness of mind. Miss Sturgis has well planned and
carefully directed a program for the girls here.

The Squaws of West Georgia ended a successful
season by overrunning Reinhardt 30 to 21 making
a total of four victories, three losses and one tie.
They exchanged victory for defeat to all teams ex-
cept Georgia Evening School, which the team only
met in one game.

For the season the team scored 206 points to 165
for their opponents. The high scorers were Ander-
son, Barnes, Woodruff, and Mitchell with 66, 45,
40, and 35 respectively.

I ,

Good old West Georgia. We couldn't help re-
turning could we. Sophomores? Yes, the nnagnetic
force was too great to let us stay away. We had
to come back to finish what we had begun and to
work even harder than ever before. The first year
we found out what it was all about. This year we've
tried to use that knowledge.

The seriousness of the task before us, however,
has not interferred with our having fun, for truly no
one could have had more fun than we have had.

Through the year we have enjoyed the coopera-
tion of both the faculty members and our fellow
students in classes, socials, and the many organiza-
tions on the campus. All this has added up to a
happy and most successful year.

Some of our graduating class may return to com-
plete a third year's work here. Others will secure
jobs or continue their college career elsewhere. In
the army or elsewhere we will know that our college
days at West Georgia were well spent and that our
later life will be enriched by them.

The Student Body is headed by three competent leaders: Pres-
ident Hubert Vaughn, Vice-President Ruth Blaylock, and Secretary
and Treasurer Mary Bess Jackson. These three Sophomores direct
activities and determine policies for the entire student group. Some
of their many duties are to assist freshmen during Orientation Week
and to arrange and conduct student elections in the Fall and Spring.
Several mass meetings were held during the year to cope with various
student problems. Through the efforts of these leaders many prob-
lems were solved and goals reached in order to make our campus
a better place in which to live.

INTRAMURALS

Soccer . . . speedball . . . baseball . . . basketball . . . tennis . . . archery . . . ping-
pong . . . badminton . . . shuffleboard . . . golf . . . every student at West Georgia
College is offered the opportunity of participating in one or all of these sports. The
whole year 'round sports enthusiasts compete with each other in varied games, whether
individually or on class or dormitory teams.

Tennis was offered both in Fall and Spring quarters. Basketball was tops during
the cold weather, and softball reigned in the Spring. This year the intramural sports
for the girls were conducted by the W. A. W., of which organization each student was
a member. Clubs were formed for each sport. The men's intramural sports were under
the direction of the Men's Physical Education Department. Competition was keen and
we were proud of each team for their constant work and practice. Many letters were
awarded.

Physical education is as much a part of West Georgia as the Ac Building,
and these activities foster a feeling of good sportsmanship, rivalry, and fraternity.

VARSITY TENNIS

Among the Members of the Team were: COLQUITT, STRIPLIN, LOUGHRIDGE, HENSLEy

Proudly presenting . . . girls' tennis . . . clubs were organized this year and
tournaments played to determine how each girl progressed. Many lassies tried swing-
ing the racket for the first time . . . older hands at the game improved their skill.

General interest was shown by the enthusiastic gatherings at the court each after-
noon. The girls worked hard and enjoyed every minute of it! . . . Tennis , . . like
all other sports . . . contributes to cooperation and coordination.

CHARACTER

is honor ... a high sense of personal responsibility and
respect for one's obligations, and every young man and
woman has the right to be trained in the tenets of honesty
and fairness . . . otherwise his education is incomplete . . .
his chance for success is impaired.
