Each student has his own picture of a
professor. Some students may remem-
ber a professor for the "impossible"
tests he gave. Some may laughingly
recall the corny jokes he related each
day in class. Others may recall the day
when, after making an 18 on a major
test, they were told that all hope was
not lost for that B at the end of the quar-
ter. Still others may recall a teacher
because they remember realizing one
day that this professor was not only
human, but "down right nice." In what-
ever manner a student visualizes his
professors, it is obvious that, no matter
what, this institute of learning could not
continue without them.

Judo

judo began shortly before the turn of
the last century in )apan and has spread
around the world as a very individualis-
tic, demanding, person-to-person sport.
It has been included in the Olympics as
a permanent sport, and increasing num-
bers of American colleges and universi-
ties offer full scholarships for prospec-
tive students proficient in Judo. Even
though West Georgia College is not one
of those schools offering scholarships at
this time, already we are attracting new
students who attend WCC primarily to
play judo. The West Georgia College
judo Club offers classes in judo and
self-defense for area boys and girls and
also for college students and other
adults. At this time, the club has three,
black belts in its rolls and expects
several more within the next academic
year. New students mav begin practice
of judo at any time during the \ear; it is
not begun anew with each quarter but
is an on-going process of instruction.

Braves Basketball

*"** m -

FRONT ROW: Tony Stoud, Dave Edmonds, Jessie Fields, Terry Faulkner. SECOND ROW: Jeff Lacava, Floyd Phoenix, Pat
Magley, Sam Christian, Tim Reynolds, Alan Gustavel, Alexander Mitchell.

152

The West Georgia College Braves turned in their fifth
straight winning campaign at the conclusion of the 1974-75
regular season. It also marked the fourth straight year that
the Braves had compiled the top collegiate basketball
record in the state of Georgia. The defending NAIA
National Champions, Georgia's first national basketball tit-
lists, opened the schedule with a smashing 93-67 win over
the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, a quarterfinalist
last season in the NIT. After suffering three early season
losses, West Georgia reeled off 11 straight wins, averaging
more than 90 points per game in the process. Rated as high
as seventh in an early season Associated Press poll, the
Braves tied for their second straight South Atlantic Confer-
ence regular season championship with an 8-2 mark. How-
ever, WGC fell to Armstrong State 74-72 in overtime and
dropped the conference tournament title in Savannah.
West Georgia, which placed all five starters in double fig-
ures, was led by 6-3 guard Dave Edmonds, the lone return-
ing starter from last season's national championship squad
and the 1974-75 team captain. The New York City native,
who was selected to the 1974 NAIA National All-Tourna-
ment team, averaged 19.4 points during his senior season
and was selected to numerous preseason All-American
teams, as was running mate Tony Stroud. As a team, the
Braves averaged 88.7 points and allowed an average of only
74.3 for a win margin of 14.4. During the past five years
West Georgia basketball teams have been ranked among
the nation's elite, compiling a cumulative mark of 112 wins
and 32 losses during head coach Roger Kaiser's tenure, giv-
ing him the nation's fourth best active record (percentage).
Also during the past season the Braves ran their consecu-
tive win streak at home to 23, including 54 wins in 55 home
contests since 1970, one of the best marks in the nation.
After viewing both the Valdosta State game in which the
Braves took a double overtime 89-85 decision and the
homecoming bout with Armstrong State which was won
97-86, an Atlanta sportswriter called the West Georgia
crowd the "best basketball fans in the state . . . simply
incredible!" The Braves drew more than 3,500 for the Val-
dosta game and a record 4,100 for homecoming, all within
a gym that officially seats 3,000. At presstime West Georgia
had accepted a bid to the NCAA South Central Regional in
New Orleans. A win in Louisiana would send the Braves to
Evansville, Indiana for the National Tournament and a shot
at a second straight national championship.

Lady Braves Basketball

FIRST ROW: Roxann Lucas, Sharon Stalls, Carolyn Almond, Tina Holmes, Carol Bell, Linda Gilleece. SECOND ROW: Clever Nails, Debby McCury, Diane
Bedford, Donna Wood, Linda Nails, Gail Jackson, Rosalind Underwood.

164

The combined efforts of Coach Dot McNabb and
Coach Sandra Raye have produced one of the fin-
est women's basketball teams that West Georgia
has ever seen. The Lady Braves have accomplished
much even against the odds. With Coach McNabb
busy with committee meetings, Coach Raye came
over to help out a little. She was more than just a
little help. She took the team to quite a few sea-
sonal games, but none of them was as exciting as
the one with Mercer at the coliseum. Mercer
labeled it as an upset, and they were upset. It was
the first time in four years that Mercer's ladies had
been defeated in the coliseum. The Lady Braves
did not slow down after that, even when one of
their starting girls was injured and could not play.
They made the trip to Columbus for the state tour-
nament, playing four games in two days and win-
ning all of them.

FIRST ROW: luanila Dickens, Carolyn Almond, Billie Banks, Debby McGury, Roxann Lucas. SECOND ROW: Faye Benjamin, manager; Jinny Carmer, Diane
Benford, Sunny Myrell, Donna Wood, Clever Nails. BELOW: Dot McNabb, coach.

170

The members of the women's volleyball team,
coached by Dot McNabb, are heroes in their own
way. The women do not let this influence their
game too much because Coach McNabb stresses
the value of good team play rather than individual
glorification. Coach McNabb has emphasized the
importance of hard work, and it seems to have
paid off again for her team. This year the women's
volleyball team ended its season with a record of
57 wins and 9 losses. Two of these nine losses
came when the team met Mississippi State Univer-
sity on the court. However, the women defeated
MSU when they met again in region playoffs.

The West Georgia College golf team, under
the direction of Coach Skip Yow, is returning
for another season of golf at Treasure Lake

state. Last season the team was second in Dis-
trict 25 as the NAIA champion and fourth in
the conference.

The 1975 Braves are a completely new
team except for about five players. Last
year's team was 36 and 12 and led the
conference in hitting and fielding. Last
year's team defeated Virginia, Maryland,
Wake Forest, and Georgia Tech. This
year West Georgia has 43 games sched-
uled. Henry Mays and Rick Camp, who
both played last year, have signed pro-
fessional contracts. According to Coach
White, the team may be "green," but its
members are willing to work.

team is placing major emphasis on quality, not
