County and surrounding areas, or persons living anywhere who have
roots in Carroll County or an interest in the founding fathers.and
history of the County. This Society does not assume responsibility

5 January 1983
Dear Members,
It is indeed an honor to have been asked to serve as President
of the Society for 1983* I invite each of you to join actively with
US’ in this new year. I believe you will find that we have planned
some excellent programs — including a basic genealogical workshipf
a luncheon meeting, a field trip, and our annual picnic.
For those unable to be with us in Carroll County in 1983» I
wish you continued success in pursuing your roots. I hope you will
keep your membership in the Carroll County Genealogical Society.
We will try to see that the Quarterly remains the outstanding
publication we think it is. And don't hesitate to send in your
queries!
As a special feature of our meetings this year, we plan to have
members share the stories of the migrations of some of their ances¬
tors. Hopefully, some of these presentations will make it into
print in our Quarterly.
We also look forward this year to publication of the book
listing Carroll County cemetery gravestones. Many persons have
spent a lot of time working to make this book a reality. Evylan
Morrow, Mary Reeves, and Edna Lackey particularly deserve our
sincerest gratitude for all that they have contributed to this
project.
Nor could I close this letter without thanking Clarice Cox for
her leadership this past year. Also, we should all tell her how
much we appreciate her taking up the editorship of the Quarterly.
I hope the rest of you will forgive me for not mentioning you
by name. Your contributions to the Society are appreciated too.
Once again, let me say how much I am honored by being given
the opportunity to serve as President of a growing and going
Society.
Sincerely,
Myron W. House

This completes the 1842 Tax Digest of Carroll County, Georgia, as
recorded in the Original Volume. This Volume is on file in the Clerk
of the Superior Court Office, Carroll County Courthouse, Carrollton,
Georgia.
A copy of the following petition has been received by the Society:
Carrollton, Ga., Apr. 14, 1899
To the Hon. Grand Jury Carroll Co.
Gentlemen:
In view of the fact that an ordinarily heavy rain raises
Curtis creek, on the Villa Rica road, to such an extent as to
make it unsafe to cross, and causing a great deal of inconvenience
to the travelling public, we the following citizens and tax payers
on said road, petition your honorable body to recommend the
building of a bridge over the said creek.
Very Respectfully,
(Signed)

THE FIRST WILL RECORDED IN CARROLL COUNTY
Marriages & Wills, Inventory & Appraisements, 1828-1845, 1$48,
pp. 10-11. July 9, 1828.
In the name of God Amen. I Richard Ben§on being in sound mind
but in bad bodily health and thinking it best to keep a will about me
have thought fit to make this my last Will & Testament. I commend my
soul to the keeping of my heavenly father and my body.
I desire my wife Sarah Benson who I leave to be my sole Executrix
to have decently buried. I desire that as soon as possible she pay
what few debts I owe. All my property of every kind I leave to my
beloved wife her lifetime to her sole use and benefit out of which she
is to support my son Andrew Jackson Benson and to give him such
education as she can and at her death I devise and give my property in
the following manner:
To my son Andrew Jackson such property as I have to the amount of
Thirty Five dollars in worth to be chosen by him and valued by dis¬
interested persons and all the balance I give and bequeath to be
equally divided between Elizabeth Oakly, my daughter, and my son
Andrew Jackson and also I direct my executrix to pay to my eldest
daughter upon her applying for it one Silver dollar, the thirty five
dollars worth of property which my Son is to have before a division
is made to make support equal to what my daughter has had.

Mr. James M. Walker
Carrollton, Ga.
Dear Friend,
While thinking of my old associates in Carroll, and wishing that
I could see them, and be with them as I once have been, you passed
before me in my imagination, causing me to remember the happy moments
which we have spent together so frequently. There is not a young
gentleman in your community with whom I would be more delighted to
converse than you. I think of you all frequently, and of Aunt Polly's
kindness and Uncle Jo. How he would talk and tell his wonderful
anecdotes. And surely I shall never forget little Dora. who would
-19-
meet me at the gate with an innocent, unassuming smile. Indeed the
kindness of the whole family to me I shall ever remember. I am doing
as well at this place, as I could possibly do anywhere. I am connected
with a good praying, southern, Methodist family. The gentleman (Mr.
James Wright) is a very wealthy man. He tells me that he will plant
about 200 acres of land in cotton* He. treats, me very kindly. His good
wife is one of the best women I ever saw. She is just as kind to me
as she can be. She tells me that she will be a second Mother to me
and treats me as if I were a child. I have three bright children to
instruct. I get Three hundred Dollars, my board, lights and washing.
I am also connected with one of the finest churches in the county.
My religious advantages are good. Well, I imagine you are getting on
finely, enjoying yourself extremely well. You have no idea how much
it would delight me to be at the old Campground, and go back and forth
to the old spring. When I think of you all in Carroll, & my Dear
Parents, sometimes my heart gets full, and it is all I can do to keep
from shedding tears, but I suppose my friends think or care but little
about me. But one thing I know. My dear Parents think, care & pray
for me. I must close. If you can come down a little write to me as
soon as you get this. Believe me.

J. Theodore Phillips of Douglasville writes to the Society as follows:
"My family bought the land in 1829 on which I erected a house
last year (1980) here in Douglas County. Now we have lived on this
land 152 years. My ancestral home stands about 150 yards from my
house and the old slave house still, stands in the back yard. The
slave house was erected in the mid-i790*s by Abraham Owl, a Cherokee
Indian, but the house where my ancestors lived was finished and
occupied on April 4, 1834. It was first in Carroll, then Paulding,
later Campbell, and since 1870 in Douglas County."

to Sarah PARKER on 26 March 1851. The Fall 1982 Quarterly on Page 104
shows their marriage on 26 March 1857* The 1851 date should be correct
as they had children in 1852, 1853» and 1855*
