this was changzd to North Carolina. M.C.M.) about thz yzaA 1700—woa a man of
wzalth and respectability, hzld Azvzral important poAittons In thz colonial government,
but bzcamz a Atrong partisan in favor o<$ liberty for thz colonize and favoring a rzdrzAA

Thz result was that a Azgimznt of British tAoopA was AZnt out to aAAZAt thz parties
with authority, to tAy and punish thz dlsturberA even with thz extreme pznalty of dzath.
With thz approval of thz Governor of NoAth CaAolina [TAyon], thzy succeeded in arresting
and making prisoners of Captain MzaazII and hi* band, confined thzm in thz thiAd story
his mansion, whilz thzy appAopAiatzd thz second story of thz same for thz quarters
of thz officers and thziA soldiers.
Thzy wzaz thus hzld until a mock tAial of thz IzadzA was gonz tfiAough with,

MaAy was often at thz house ot$ MzaazII duAing thz stay of, thz British, and thz com¬

as hzA polite and kindly treatment towaAdA him, and hiA comAadzA, Onz day hz camz into
thz Aoom whzAZ Ahz wolA and complimented hzA gAzatly on hzA bzauty and kindness to him,
and Aaid that hz had called to offer hzA a boon before hz left, aA hz and hiA command

and hz would in hiA powzA) cheerfully do it. She modzAtly Azplizd, "If you oaz

"That, dzaA Madam," Azplizd thz officzA, "iA beyond my powzA; to azIzoaz thz IzadzA

And hz did AO.
Thzy finally executed Captain Bznjaminz MzaazII and confiscated his laAgz ZAtatz.
Hz left Azvzn AonA who all AZAvzd on thz "Rebel" Aide thz whole Azvzn yzaAA of thz
Revolutionary WaA. His wife AUAvivzd him a vzAy AhoAt time. She woa Jemima Smith,
a Azlativz of Captain John Smith, who woa thz first zxploAZA of thz country around
ChzAapzakz Bay and up thz Potomac and Shenandoah RivzAA. A mutual attachment ApAang

Azmovzd to NoAth Carolina. _ShoAtly bzfoAZ thz war of independence of thz colonizA
commenced, his bAothzAA [azvzaoI.of thzm) went to NoAth Carolina. Many of thz desczndants yet live and many, howzvzA, of thzm are AcattzAzd ovza Kentucky, Illinois,
MlsAouri, Ohio, and othzA wzAtzAn AtatzA.
Mary Wiseman’a father woa English and Scotch, and her mother French. John woa
of English, Scotch and Welch. When thzy Azttlzd in North Carolina, thz young couple
without property in a new country, Aurrounded with wild bzaAtA and more to bz dreaded
IndianA. In 1774 hz woa called to thz war. Hz had to leave his wife with two little
children to make a Aupport for hzAAzlf and her children thz bzAt Ahz could. That
Azction of thz country was about equally divided in Azntimznt—one half patriots and
thz other half torizA; thz latter the worst and moAt unAcrupulouA portion of thz
community. The men on thz Whig Aide all being gonz to war, thz Tories committed
awful outrages on thziA families at home, Atzaling, robbing, burning, etc.

She wa* living on and tunning a little latm, a young woman living with het. They had

that the Totie* would take het bed clothe* il she got up, AItet eating, they thtew
the women'* weating clothe* in the lite and dtew out the bed tom undet the young

Captain dtew out. hi* *wotd, handed it to het and *aid, "How, Mt*. Mettell, take satislaction, don't *pate one ol them," She took the swotd and tai*ed it, but all *ix, at
once dtopped on theit knee* and commenced begging. She dtopped the *wotd and *aid,
"Captain, I could not *ttike one ol them to *ave my tile," He teplied, "Well, my boy*
hete know how to deal with *uch." They then without anothet wotd to het matched them

descendant* are scattered oveA that state, Illinois and Indiana. He was, peAhaps,
twenty-^ive years otdeA than lather, James went with them. Both died there many years
ago. The writer had no knowledge ol the lamity ol Uncle James. George, the youngest,
was stricken by lightning when an infant in his cradle and his senses were never right.
He died unmarried at about twenty live. There were several daughters, all older than
lather. He can only mention three, one ol whom married John Lyner and went to Tennessee
a great while ago when that was a newly settled country. One married a Rodgers and went
to the West many years ago. This is all we know ol them or their descendants. The
latter's name was Rachel and is said to have been a most beautilul woman. Jemima
married Mershon in Sparta, Hancock County, Georgia, where they raised a lamily ol
several children, one ol whom now lives at Talbotton, Georgia. We think his name is
John Mershon, though not sure as to the Christian name. A daughter married B.F. Dense
at the same place* They moved to Milledgeville, Georgia, kept hotel there uYitil about
1864 when they moved to Macon,.Georgia, lotlowed the same business until 1872 when he
died. Aunt Jemima had been living with them several years (having lost her husband).
She died not long Irom the time Mr. Dense did at an extreme old age.. Mrs. Dense kept
hotel in Macon a lew years alter her husband's death, but has now moved out and is
living in a private house together with her daughter, Rebecca Harris lwho is also a
widow). One ol the "Dense boys" is lollowing railroading, running on the South Western
ol Georgia.
This lamily ol Mershons are all the paterYial relations with whom the writer is
acquainted.
The mother ol the writer had three brothers, Henry Farmer Chandler, Thomas and
Asa. The lirst wile Frances Harben. He lived the greatest protion ol his tile in
Franklin County, Georgia, died in Hart Couyity, Georgia, over seventy years old, had
several sons—John Newton, Thomas C. Morgan, Asa, several daughters, Nancy, Martha,
Mary, the other we have lorgotten. Thomas C. lives in Banks County, Georgia, Mary
lives near Fairplay, South Carolina, some ol the others in Hart and Franklin Counties
arid several are gone West.
Thomas Chandler lived in Carroll County, Georgia. His children married Thomas
and Martha in Texas, Marion in Mississippi, Dorothy in Dougherty County, Georgia,
Newton, Mary Ann [Thrower), Rhoda Baskin and Harriet Baskin all live in.Carroll County,
Georgia. He is seventy six years old. His wile, Polly Jackson, is alive also, both
in rather leeble health. . Uncle Asa Chandler was born in Franklin County, Georgia, became a Baptist preacher
belore he was lolly grown, married and went lirst to Ruckersville Irom there to
Elberton, Georgia, where he died a lew years ago, aged near seventy. He had been three
times married; le.lt several children all ol whom [except Harriet who lives in Carroll)
live in Elbert perhaps. She had live sisters. The lirst, Nancy, married General
William Bell, lived in Franklin and Carroll Counties, Georgia. He died in August 1851
at Elijay, Georgia ol apoplexy. She is still living in her eighty lour years. Their
eldest son, Otho, died in Randolph leaving a widow and a goodly number ol children all
grown up and most ol them married and living in that section except William, who lives
in Carroll. Secoyid son, Augustus C., lives in Texas. Third, Thomas N., lives in
Wilkinson County, Georgia; James M. lives in Carroll County, Georgia. Filth, Noble N.
lives in Paulding County, Georgia. Fourth son, William 0. died during the late war.
John B. lives at Franklin, Georgia, married Mary Jane Merreil, the writer’s daughter.
Three daughters: Jane Amelia married Thomas S. Green. They live in Paulding County,
Georgia. Second, Martha, married James L. Stephens. He died many years ago leaving
her a widow, she has never again married. Third, Mary, married Martin Hardin. They
live in east Tennessee. All ten Of$ the laregoing, except the eldest daughter, Mrs.
Green, have a large number ol children, many grown up, married and have lamilies ol
their own.

I have. reason to be thankful to the Lord for my happy marital relations and
indeed all of my domestic relations of life.
. I have comparatively little, to do with party politic*—.served a* delegate, in the
Convention held at Miiiedgeviile in 1865 and assisted in {\raming the Constitution
arid "Scaling OAdinance” etc. of the yeaA, served a* State SenatoA from the 37th
District in 1868-9-70, had the honoA to offer the Joint Resolution to be AestoAed to
"Government in the Union" on the terms prescribed by Congress, which was adopted finally,
and Georgia was restored to her proper place in the Union. Z also introduced the bill
which finally passed and became a law to lease the.hi. 6 A.R.R. for 20 years, whereby
the State received $500,000 per annum instead o6 paying out to keep the road up $140,000
per annum, which.she had done for the last 17 years..
Zn 1872 I was one of the Grant Electoral Candidates, afterwards served as U.S.
Circuit Court Commissioner for the Northern District of.Georgia for several years and
Commissioner to take testimony in claims against the Government for property taken
from Loyal Citizens by the U.S. Army during the war.
Z have always held and still hold that, the United States is a Nation, that every
citizen owes paramount allegiance to the same; that the Union was formed before
Zndependence was obtained; that if independence was acknowledged by Great Britain and
the other Powers as the "United States" or as the "States United", not as 13 independent
sovereignties, although the 13.were mentioned by name in articles of treaty, they were
mentioned as the constituent parts of the "United States," —the Government they ac¬
knowledged the Zndependence of before that time the "Confederation and Perpetual Union"
was formed, which has never been annulled.
The Constitution that was formed some ten years after the Union, so far from re¬
pealing or modifying the articles of Union, expressly says in its preamble that the
object among other.things is "to form a more perfect Union." Then in the body of
the Constitution every attribute of sovereignty is.delegated to United States, the
states retaining only what is municipal in their nature "All powers not delegated to
United States or prohibited to the States are reserved to the States respectively or
to the people, "that is, what belongs to a State as such is reserved to the State and
the powers not so belonging to State, to the people." What people? The people of
several states? No, not.the people the several states, but the whole people of
the United States in convention assembled or otherwise; hence, it follows that "Secession
is not admissable, because it violates the original compact upon which our forefathers
gained our independence. Otherwise, they never would have succeeded.
When the war came on, Z entertained the views expressed on the foregoing and so
expressed myself then then the maintenance of the Union was the duty of every citizen,
not to countenance disloyalty or rebellion but patiently submit to legal authority
and conform to laws of the country; but when Z saw the opposite spirit prevailed and
that through the influence of our Southern Leaders the Union was despised and the
Constitution derided and spit upon and a government established here and that Z would
be compelled to go north or fall into line and go with the Confederacy, Z accepted
the latter and did what Z could to aid those in armed rebellion against the U.S.,
believing it my. duty to submit to principalities and powers and be obedient to them
that had rule over me for the Lord’s sake.

Many thanks to Miriam Clark Merrell, the daughter of Thomas H. Merrell, and the
granddaughter of W.W. Merrell, who most graciously shared this Merrell autobiography
and early history of Carroll County, Georgia with us for publication in our quarterly.
Members, these.notes here published should be an inspiration to each of us to clean
out the attic and dig deeper into those old trunks! Wouldn’t it be wonderful to find
that we , too, had an ancestor—such as W.W. Merrell—who took the time to record
family history, war experiences, stories of contemporaries, personal accomplishments,
and opinions1 from the letters Z receive from our members, Z know that this is the
type of .information that is enjoyed the most in our quarterly—so let’s get all those
old diaries dusted off and turned in to the editor for sharing with others!

Uncle Johnnie.was a highly respected citizen, a good neighbor, and no doubt a genuine

the 185Q CarroZZ County Census! This book has been put together after much Zong
and painstaking research .by .our members, NeZZ Yates and CZarice Cox, C.G.R.S. This
particular census is invaZuabZe for genealogists because aZZ members of a househoZd
are named, age 8 .sex given, and also place of birth. Only a limited number of these
books will, be available, so do not hesitate to place your order! The cost is
$8.00 per book, cost of .mailing included. This is not a hardbound book but is similar
in appearance to our quarterZy. It incZudes an index also. The proceeds of this
book .will go towards financing future pubZication projects (such as our cemetery
research) of the CarroZZ County Genealogical Society. If you would like to purchase
a copy of this valuable research tool, please send your check or money order to:
Mrs. NeZZ Yates, 818 Tyus Road, Bowdon, Ga. 30108.
Yes! I would like a copy the 1850 CarroZZ County Census available now!
