- Description:
- In this series of WSB newsfilm clips from Jefferson, Georgia, on March 28, 1969, reporter Bill Buckner gives details of the first day of the second trial of A. C. (Cliff) Park for the murder of Floyd G. Hoard.
The clip is divided into two segments, part one and b-roll. Part one begins with a shot of reporter Bill Buckner standing outside of the Court House in Jefferson, Georgia. Buckner says, "It was almost like watching a rerun of an old movie as the first day of Cliff Park's new trial began. Some of the cast of characters has changed, though. The Chief Prosecutor is new, he's George Lawrence, a district attorney assigned by Governor Maddox to take the case. The local district attorney, that's the same job Floyd Hoard held, is also new. He's Nat Hancock, who was just recently elected to the office. Otherwise, the cast and plot is pretty much the same. Judge Mark Dunahoo sits on the bench, listening to the same excuses from jurors about why they can't serve, and the same objections from defense attorney Wesley Asinof. In the courtroom, Mrs. Floyd Hoard sits flanked by G.B.I. agents, just as she did during the first trial. Mrs. Cliff Park and her daughter sit directly behind the defense table, just almost as if they had never moved. The main character, of course, is Cliff Park himself, who retains the same calm he exhibited during the first trial, both inside the courtroom and out." The clips cut to a shot of a room where many people are seated, facing away from the camera. At the front of the room, one unidentified white male stands at a podium, facing the seated crowd. The clips cut to a shot of an unidentified white male, seated with the crowd, and then to another shot of the seated crowd and the unidentified white male at the podium. The clips cut again to two unidentified white males seated in the crowd.
The second segment of the clip is b-roll, during which A. C. (Cliff) Park exits a building with an unidentified white male. The clips follow Park as he walks on a sidewalk, and an unidentified male voice asks from off camera, "Mr. Park, how've you been doing?" Mr. Park replies, "Doing very well, thank you." The unidentified white male reporter asks, "I don't guess you're sorry to be here today, are you?" Mr. Park responds, "No." Another unidentified male voice asks from off camera, "How do you think your trial will go?" Park replies, "I think it'll be better than the last one." A reporter asks from off camera, "Did you hope to have a trial somewhere else besides Jefferson this time?" Park says, "I tried to." The reporter asks, "Why couldn't you?" Park says, "They wouldn't give it to us." The reporter asks, "Why not?" Park says, "I don't know." The reporter asks, "Would you rather have been tried somewhere else?" Park says, "Yes."
The clips cut to an unidentified white male opening a car door and walking out of frame. A. C. Park gets into the car and some unintelligible conversation takes place. A white male reporter asks, "Had you hoped you would get this, Mr. Park? This new trial?" Park says, "Huh?" The reporter repeats, "Had you hoped you would get this? Did you always think you would?" Park nods and closes the car door. The clips cut to the car pulling onto the road with Park in the passenger seat and driving away from the camera.
