- Description:
- In this WSB-TV newsflip clip from August 13, 1968, Bob Nash, executive vice president of the Georgia Cattlemen's Association, speaks to reporters about his hopes for legislative help in dealing with packs of wild dogs that have been attacking livestock; he is probably speaking at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta, Georgia.
The clip shows Mr. Nash saying to reporters, "These dogs are coming from throughout the country. A lot of them are in packs scattered throughout the woods. Some of them are dogs that belong to somebody who doesn't care too much about them and lets them run loose, or will take them out--they no longer care for them--and they will take them out and dump them to the roadside, and in doing so, these dogs have to have something to eat, and they will attack [...] livestock: hogs, cattle, various things like this, for something to eat."
An unidentified white male reporter asks, "Why don't you just shoot these dogs?"
Nash replies, "Well, you could shoot this dog, but actually, legally, I don't think you can shoot the dog. I don't believe our law would allow you, because that dog belongs to someone, or is supposed to belong to someone, and you shoot the dog, you're destroying his personal property."
The same reporter asks, "Just exactly what would you like the legislature to do for you?"
Nash replies, "Well, this is a difficult problem, and [will] probably take a lot of studying. I hope the committee that the [legislature] has set up to study this problem will come up with some real recommendations for this year. I think that possibly we may need a licensing of dogs, or some way to identify these dogs and the people who own them, if they want to be responsible for the action of this dog. I think this is our problem: that too many people like to have a dog around, but they don't want to be responsible for what he does."
