"It's shocking to know that after all these years, the Parole Board in Georgia has never held open formal meetings to take action on cases. It has held hearings, but it has never sat at a Board regularly in a business-like way to handle matters of executive clemency [...] be too critical of the present people in the area because they have been part in what has been going on all these years. What is wrong with the Board holding a meeting, a public meeting? Why not public decisions of a public body, publicly arrived at? Would not seem that in this day and time that a Governor should have to call upon a Board in the state of Georgia to hold a formal meeting to transact business open to all, where they report of the proceedings of that meeting sent to the Governor and made available to the public and the press."
"I'm glad that we're ahead in our teacher pay and we're going to stay ahead and we're going to get further ahead in 1968 and we're going to keep doing the job, regardless of criticism, regardless of the obstructions [...] You think I'm going to turn back on the field of education because we got a tight money situation, then you got another thought coming, and anyone else that thinks I'm going to turn back on it."
