- Description:
- In this series of WSB-TV clips from Atlanta, Georgia on November 29, 1967, House Speaker George L. Smith oversees a hearing led by Pardons and Paroles Board member J. O. Partain regarding claims of payoffs.
The opening shot is of the General Assembly. The next clips shows fellow Pardons and Paroles Board members Rebecca L. Garrett and J. W. Claxton. The next few clips show various people talking and listening to the hearing. The next clip has audio and shows Speaker of the House, George L. Smith addressing J. O. Partain, who is leading the hearing.
Georgia House Speaker George L. Smith: "Let's call a spade a spade and then call names if you're going to make those kinds of accusations."
Partain: "Well Mr. Chairman, I didn't say that a House member spent $7500 for helping a man on parole. I said that I was misquoted by the press that I had a letter from an inmate reporting that a legislator who is not a lawyer received $500 for helping a parolee obtain parole."
The next clip shows unidentified white man. The next clip shows Partain again.
Pertain: "I have never stated any laws violated. I only referred to this as an example of influence or rumors of or lies about influence. The very next sentence which was admitted by the press stated, quote, the most reprehensible practices are the rumormongers, whisperers, and outright liars, end quote."
