- Description:
- In this WSB-TV newsfilm clip from probably February 1964, Dr. Mildred Stahlman, a pediatrician, is interviewed on topics from birth control, the death of the Kennedy baby, the use of anesthesia during labor, and childbirth practices in underdeveloped parts of the world. The clip begins with the doctor saying that birth control or planned parenthood should be available to those who desire it.
An unidentified male reporter asks Dr. Stahlman about research on the disease that took the life of Patrick Bouvier Kennedy. The disease which killed Patrick Kennedy was then known as hyaline membrane disease, but is now known as respiratory distress syndrome. She says that the primary things they have been able to research in these babies are their heart, lung function, and circulation. She says they have been able to use alkaline solutions intravenously to correct acidosis and give sugar intravenously. She says these babies are most vulnerable in the first 72 hours when their lungs collapse, circulation fails, and there is a lack of oxygen.
The reporter then asks her if a baby born with this condition now has a better chance than he did a year ago. She replies that they did not know much about this disease five years ago but babies do survive now who wouldn't in the past.
The reporter asks her if the trend of using anesthetics during childbirth has affects on a baby. Dr. Stahlman says that a woman should not have to go through a long labor and delivery without support and that babies who are already at risk from mothers who have had bleeding, diabetes, or hypoxemia are at most risk of being harmed by overzealous use of sedation in the mother.
The reporter asks Dr. Stahlman if she has seen problems in the delivery of babies in underdeveloped parts of the world during her travels. She says that newborns in underdeveloped countries suffer from lockjaw or tetanus due to non-sterile equipment used to cut umbilical cords.
The last question the reporter asks concerns what effects modern medical practices would have on overpopulation if they were introduced in underdeveloped countries with high birth rates but not survival rates. Dr. Stahlman says that neonatal and mortality statistics go hand-in-hand with improving economic and social gains in these countries.
