- Description:
- This series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips opens with several silent shots. The first has a sign reading: "This is Techwood Clark Howell Homes [unreadable section] Housing Authority of the City of Atlanta. A low rent housing project serving the Atlanta community. Information office 521 Techwood Dr. N.W." The next shot is of the side of the building showing the traffic lights at the corner. It pans around to show more of the street. The next clip is of an entrance to the building. There are three clips of a construction site, the first showing a large pipe, a construction crane, and buildings in the background. The next two are a closer shot of the crane, and a closer shot of the buildings in the background.
The sound begins with a clip showing an unidentified reporter, and an unidentified businessman. It is possible that this is Jack Adair who was president of the Atlanta Real Estate Board in the late 1950s, and was elected president of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce in 1959. He is making a comment that is not recorded. The reporter then asks about impact in areas such as employment. The businessman replies that it will relate to every bit of merchandise sold because building is the second largest industry in the nation, second only to agriculture. If there is a drop in the economy it is felt in the building industry whose employees then cannot purchase other products such as cars and kitchen ranges.
There is another series of silent clips similar to the first ones showing the sign, entrances to the buildings, a wagon under a bush by some steps, chair leaning against a building, and the construction site. The same unidentified businessman says: "We estimate that the President's order will reduce construction in the new home field, in the FHA and VA market by about 10-20% in the Atlanta area."There are two silent clips of cars on ramps with views of downtown Atlanta. These are followed by a series of silent clips of a meeting, including a stack of papers and notepads, and several men talking.
The final clip is the reporter interviewing the same unidentified businessman. The first part of the question is unclear, but continues: "will be lifted after a few months, or will it be permanent damage to the economy?" The response: "It's never permanent. Sooner or later people will get used to the fact that supply and demand demands what's going to be built in an area and what's going to be sold in the areas. So supply and demand is your final ultimate outcome." The reporter gets up and the clip ends.
The clips are probably from the late 1950s or early 1960s.
