- Description:
- In this series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips from Woodbury, Georgia on October 11, 1961, Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Phil Campbell is featured in a parade celebrating the Pimiento Festival. The series of clips begins with a shot of the crowd which has gathered on the sidewalks to watch the parade. There is a close up of a young white girl in a plaid dress with the legs of the crowd visible behind her. Five men who may be troops march down the street dressed in uniforms, wearing helmets, and carrying the American flag, the flag commonly referred to as the Confederate flag, and a third unidentified flag. A white boy and the same young girl who appeared earlier are shown with the crowd visible behind them.
Two white women riding on the back of a convertible are shown briefly, and then the boy and girl shown earlier and another boy appear. A light-colored convertible with five men inside is shown briefly, then four men in military dress uniforms march in step. Two carry flags, the American flag and a flag which may be the Marine Corps flag, and two carry rifles on their shoulders. A vehicle pulls a float containing decorations and a white woman in a white dress who is seated in front of a piece of scenery constructed to resemble a castle entrance. The seated woman waves to the camera. Hanging above the float are three flags or banners emblazoned with a design which is likely a pimento pepper. A group of approximately six men dressed in long tunics and cloth headdresses are shown next. They are carrying what appear to be small drums and drumsticks.
Next, four men in uniform march in step, holding the American flag and another unidentified flag. They are followed by more troops who march carrying rifles on their shoulders. The crowd is shown watching the parade from the sidewalk. The camera pans up the street, showing storefronts and the crowd lining the sidewalk. A sign for a drug store is visible, as well as a sign advertising Coca Cola. Children, including the little boy and little girl from earlier, are featured in a close up. A military marching band proceeds under the pimiento flags. Next, an antique automobile carrying three white men and a white woman passes, followed by a horse-drawn carriage and a float reading "SEND THE LIGHT", which contains children dressed in choir robes. The side of this float reads "WOODBURY CHURCH."
A closer shot of the woman in the white dress from the earlier float is followed by a float containing children which reads "KINDERGARTEN" on the side and "WOODBURY" on the back. One of the men wearing a tunic and headdress is shown walking backwards, and Boy Scouts march behind another float. Next, a car pulls a float containing two kneeling women and three men who stand behind them. There is text on this float, but it is not legible. Two white women riding on the back of a convertible smile and wave at the crowd. Two white women and a young white girl in a white dress follow in another convertible, also waving. Women in white dresses and a person in a Smokey the Bear costume ride a float reading "CARELESSNESS CAUSE BIG FIRES." Three white women ride by on the back of a light-colored convertible. A young white man in a drum major uniform is followed by a group of white women marching behind him.
Next, several shots from earlier in the parade are shown in rapid succession: the five men in uniform carrying three flags, the marching band, and the float with the woman in the white dress seated in front of the castle set all appear again, as well as longer shots of two white women riding on the back of a convertible and another shot of the crowd and the Coca Cola sign. The float containing the childrens choir from Woodbury Church and the antique automobile and its passengers are also shown again. A light-colored convertible containing six white men in suits passes by, with a sign reading "PHIL CAMPBELL" and fainter text that likely reads "Commissioner of Agriculture." Shots from earlier in the parade including the kindergarten float, the women marching behind the drum major, and the marching band are shown again.
