- Description:
- This series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips from November 9, 1979 is primarily concerned with the character, activities, and philanthropic goals of former Coca-Cola president and board of directors member Robert Winship Woodruff, but the first five minutes are clips from an unrelated story about health and safety complaints leveled against manufacturing company Southwire, based in Carrollton, Georgia. Footage includes factory workers wearing protective gear and an unidentified white male reporter speaking with an unidentified black male worker and unidentified white male Southwire representative. There are also several takes of the reporter introducing the story while standing in front of the Southwire building.
The Woodruff portion of the clip series begins with reporter Wes Sarginson introducing the topic in a room at Woodruff's Ichauway Plantation quail hunting preserve. He interviews an unidentified black male preserve staff member about Woodruff and his associates' hunting skills.
The remainder of the clips are from an interview with Woodruff's associate and president of the Emily and Ernest Woodruff Foundation Boisfeuillet Jones. Topics include the history of Woodruff's interest in and donations to Emory University, his role in founding the Robert Winship Clinic (now the Winship Cancer Institute) for cancer treatment as well as sponsoring research and treatment for malaria in Baker County, and his sponsorship of the arts and the building of the Atlanta Memorial Arts Center. Jones also talks about Woodruff's history of anonymous donations and projects based on the perceived needs of the Atlanta community and provides several anecdotes about Woodruff's character and personality.
