- Description:
- In this series of WSB newsfilm clips from Cobb County, Georgia on January 17, 1979, law enforcement personnel comment on the manhunt for escaped fugitive Raymond Lee Franklin.
The clips begin with various shots of a parking lot next to a brick building. Cars are parked in the lot and unidentified black and white males, some in police uniforms, walk around the parked cars and appear to have conversations, although their voices are not audible. Next the clips cut to a brief shot of a helicopter, and then to a shot of an unidentified white male and an unidentified reporter. From off camera, a male voice says, "I had heard a report, we were listening to the monitors, that they believe he's traveling barefoot, is that right?" The unidentified white male says, "He's had to get some shoes somewhere, we found the jail shoes, apparently, rubber flip flops, jail shoes, unless he's picked up some shoes somewhere -- " The unidentified male reporter says, "He's traveling barefoot." The unidentified white male interviewee says, "He's traveling barefoot right now." From off camera, another unidentified male voice says something unintelligible and the interviewee's response is also unintelligible. The unidentified male reporter says, "Your best guess: is he laying low or is he moving?" The unidentified white male interviewee says, "It's hard to guess these guys, let me tell you, its almost impossible to -- we have no reason to believe that he's gotten out of the area we believe he's probably - " the audio becomes unintelligible here for a moment, and then the unidentified interviewee says, "We just have to get some bloodhounds out there. We have a lot of manpower out there." The clips jump a bit, and the audio becomes unintelligible again. When the audio returns, the interviewee says, "Well, that's really hard to say. I think the - our job becomes harder as time passes. We will be, we just hope and pray that we have a break here and no one else is hurt. That's the important thing right now." From off camera, the unidentified male reporter says, "Nightfall can't help you, at the very least it sure can't help you." The interviewee responds, "No, its not going to help."
The clips cut to a helicopter flying over parked cars, then to a parking lot where a Lowe's store is visible in the background. A group of unidentified white males, some in police uniforms, is gathered next to a parked police car. There are several conversations going on at once, and the audio is difficult to understand. The camera pans to the right and reporter Marc Pickard is seen standing next to an unidentified white male in a brown suit. Pickard says, "We don't even need it on film, really." The unidentified white male says, "The situation we have, apparently, at this time, it appears that some sheriff's deputies was attempting to take some subjects into custody. The sheriff's deputy was somehow disarmed and is now a hostage." "Where?" asks Pickard. The unidentified white male responds, "We don't know. At this time, we have a perimeter search underway now. We also have had an individual shot in the area, but we have no identification, no next of kin, we don't know that the hostage taker perpetrated the shooting at this time, however he is a suspect. At this time, as the situation stands, we have one shot, one prisoner in custody, one deputy hostage, and one suspect a fugitive." Pickard says, "Okay. Do you know where the individual shot is?" The unidentified white male replies, "Not at this time, we're not disclosing that. We know, but we're not disclosing it for reasons I can't go into right now." Pickard says, "Understood, ok, so what we have right now is you're just searching the area to find out where the hostage is." The unidentified white male responds,"We have a full perimeter in the area and we intend to continue searching until we find the fugitive." Pickard says, "Ok, and it's a sheriff's deputy in custody?" The unidentified white male replies, "There is a sheriff's deputy hostage at this time, a Cobb County Sheriff's Deputy." Pickard says, "Cobb County, ok, thanks very much." The unidentified white male responds, "Alright." The camera follows the unidentified white male as he walks to the right and speaks with another unidentified white male. The clips cut to an unidentified white male in a police uniform. He is holding a long gun and the camera follows him as he walks around a parked police car.
The clips cut to a parked police car with the front and back passenger side doors open. The unidentified white male who was interviewed by Marc Pickard earlier is now leaning into the back of the parked car, speaking to another unidentified white male. Their conversation is not audible, and the unidentified white male who was leaning into the car stands and closes the car door. An unidentified white male in a police uniform closes the front passenger side door, and both men walk away from the car.
The clips cut to a fire truck parked next to a small white building. Next, the clips cut to a one story home with a car parked in front. The clips cut again, this time to two unidentified white males in police uniforms who stand next to a police car that is parked on the side of a road. There is audible radio chatter from the police car, but the words are not intelligible. The clips cut again to two unidentified white males in police uniforms who stand on a road, looking into the woods beside the road while holding guns. Again, the clips cut to an unidentified white male in a police uniform, holding a gun as he stands on a road. A line of police cars parked along the side of the road is visible behind him. He walks away from the camera and says, "Who are you, channel five?" From off camera, a male voice responds, "Two." The clips cut to a group of unidentified white males in police uniforms, standing beside a parked car. There is loud, unintelligible radio chatter and the men appear to be speaking to one another, but their conversation is not audible. One of the men gestures and points into the woods on the roadside. The clips cut to an unidentified white male in a police uniform who leans against a tree and faces away from the camera, looking into a wooded area. A building is visible in the distance. The clips cut again, this time to the same unidentified white male policeman, who says, "So, I don't know if he's an officer or not." From off camera, Marc Pickard asks, "Who, who is, the kid was an escaped prisoner?" The unidentified white male policeman says, "Yeah, yeah. He was over at the doctor's office, I understand and -" From off camera, an unidentified male voice says, "He disarmed them?" The unidentified white male policeman replies, "Yeah, the deputy sheriff." The same unidentified male voice says, "And then the kid went into the - " The unidentified white male policeman replies, "Yeah, yeah, the house. Shot and killed an old man, yeah." From off camera the he same unidentified male voice says, "And then took off?" The policeman says, "Yeah." From off camera, the unidentified male voice continues, "Now, as far as you understand, is the Cobb County Sheriff's Deputy a hostage?" The policeman says, "That's my understanding, yeah." The off camera male voice says, "What's the procedure here now, what are you guys doing?" The policeman says, "Waiting on the dogs to get here." "And do you follow them in?" asks the voice from off camera. The policeman says, "Yeah, hopefully they'll be here in a few minutes. They've got a chopper on the way from Canton, also. He can do a lot more from there than we can do down here." The clips cut again, and the same unidentified white male policeman says, "The old man called somebody, and, to the door, and this boy wouldn't let him get to the door and shot and killed him, and then took off running. Did you see where all those fire trucks and everything was?" The unidentified male voice says, "Yeah." The policeman says, "Ok, that's where the killing took place." From off camera, the male voice says, "What was, what did it have to do with the building?" The policeman says, "I honestly don't know." The off camera voice continues, " Did you see that there was a building on Canton Highway and there were cars over there. Then there was the house on Shannon, and there were cars over there." The policeman says, "Yeah, the house on Shannon was where -" The off camera voice says, "That's where the forty eight is." The policeman says, "Right." The off camera voice says, "But the building over on, off of Canton Highway, what happened over there, do you know? Is that where he was robbed?" The policeman says, "Apparently so. There was a couple things going on seemed like, as the same time, yes sir."
The clips cut to a shot of treetops and sky from below, and the sound of a helicopter is audible. The camera turns and follows the helicopter as it flies overhead. The clips cut again to an unidentified white male who stands next to a police car and holds a gun. The camera turns and another unidentified white male in a police uniform is visible. There is loud, unintelligible radio chatter during this portion of the clips.
