- Description:
- In this series of WSB newsfilm clips from Atlanta, Georgia on March 18, 1974, attorney Tyrus Atkinson comments on the bond amount that has been set for his client, William A. H. Williams, who is accused of the kidnapping of Atlanta Constitution editor Reg Murphy.
The clips begin with a shot of Tyrus Atkinson and reporter Jocelyn Dorsey in Atkinson's office. Atkinson sits on the corner of his desk in front of Dorsey, who is seated in a chair and faces away from the camera. Atkinson appears to be speaking, but no sound is audible. The camera then cuts to a shot taken over Atkinson's shoulder, facing Jocelyn Dorsey, who is holding a microphone. Atkinson says, "I'm doing exactly what I wanted to do when I started law school, I was..." As Atkinson speaks, the camera takes a close up of Atkinson's hands. The clips then cut to a shot of Tyrus Atkinson speaking, although no sound is audible at first. Then Atkinson is heard to say, "It does, of course, tend to work against someone who is not able to make bond. Some people, of course, who are quite rich can make any bond whatsoever. So, if you look at it in that light, that a large bond, like this hundred and fifty thousand dollar bond, is - on a man like him with no money - is simply no bond at all and, of course he, under the law, has a right to a bond, but not necessarily a bond he can meet. So, its a bit odd that our system uses bonds to guarantee appearances, we could use another method. Perhaps we should use another method."
