- Description:
- Pullman porter cap.
Pullman porters worked on sleeping cars for the United States passenger rail system from the 1870s through the 1960s. Though pay was low by contemporary standards, in a time of harsh racial prejudice and segregation, being a Pullman porter was one of the best jobs available for African Americans. In 1924, A. Philip Randolph led the movement that resulted in the creation of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first black labor organization to receive a charter in the American Federation of Labor.
