Emil Holzhauer began his artistic career as a jewelry designer in his native Germany. He studied painting in New York with noted American Impressionist Robert Henri; he left New York in 1940 to teach. Most of his teaching career was spent at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. While at Wesleyan, Holzhauer created many paintings of the alleyways, marketplaces and neighborhoods of Macon.
