- Description:
- Lithograph by Romare Bearden.
Bearden's collages and prints delineate an African American cultural mythology; knowledge of the African American experience is key to understanding his work. In this print, three women stand beneath a crest of two gray birds flanking a brown sun. Birds play a symbolic role in Bearden's expansive body of work; they symbolize migration, journey and displacement. They may also represent messengers from the spirit world, or be seen as symbols of the head as the house of knowledge, which adds significance to the placement of the birds in this image.
