- Description:
- Encyclopedia article about the 1945 Screws v. United States. Sheriff Claude Screws and two other men were accused of beating an African American man to death in the absence of provocation following his arrest. The Supreme Court ordered a new trial for the men, reasoning that the judge had not given accurate instructions to the jury on the meaning of "willfully" depriving others of "any rights, privileges, or immunities secured by the Constitution."
