- Description:
- Clete Meaders talks about the history of the Meaders family pottery business.
Video showing highlights of the Meaders family pottery business in North Georgia. Clete Meaders talks about the history of Meaders Pottery. The video begins with several views of the exterior of Meaders Pottery. It is a small, rustic structure with a tin roof. Clete Meaders states that the pottery has been open since 1892. The video then shows a large brick oven and a wooden wall on which hangs several poems, signs, and a large calendar. Meaders continues by recounting the history of his family. He describes his great-grandfather John Milton Meaders' motivation for starting the pottery, which was financial. The video then shows Clete Meaders working a ball of clay into a pot. He notes that he was born in Mobile, Alabama, and his family also had a pottery shop in that city. He then discusses how the potters working today are artists, whereas the potters from his generation and before were simply fulfilling a utilitarian need. Meaders states that he self-identifies as a potter. The video then shows a collection of face jugs from Meaders Pottery. Meaders asserts that a life as a potter comes with challenges and sacrifices, but he likes having been "elected to carry that torch."
Clete Meaders comes from a family of prominent North Georgia folk artists. His family's celebrated pottery shop, Meaders Pottery, the family's celebrated pottery shop, was established in 1893 in the Mossy Creek area of White County. - Metadata URL:
