- Description:
- As a young boy, Spud Chandler, shown here in his Yankees uniform between 1937 and 1947, was a fan of the New York team. While at the University of Georgia, he rejected offers from professional football teams and from other professional baseball teams so that he could play for the Yankees, with whom he spent his entire pitching career.
Photograph of baseball player and Georgia native "Spud" Chandler. He wears his New York Yankees uniform and cap. He looks right and smiles.
Chandler was one of the best pitchers in the American League from 1937 to 1947, when he won 109 games and lost only 43. Playing his entire career with the powerful New York Yankees, Chandler never had a losing season, and his .717 winning percentage is the highest in major league history among all pitchers with 100 or more victories. He was named to the American League all-star team four times and is a member of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. - Metadata URL:
