- During the 1960s, the WERD radio station shared the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge on Auburn Avenue with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
Photograph of the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge, located at 334 Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia. This three-story Renaissance revival structure features six arched entryways on the bottom level. Masonic medallions adorn the space between the second and third story windows. The building, which attaches to other structures on each side, stands on a street corner. Automobiles are parked on the street. An electrical pole stands in the center of the image.
During the 1960s, the WERD radio station shared the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge on Auburn Avenue with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. WERD became the first radio station in America to be owned by an African American when Jesse B. Blayton, a professor at Atlanta University and a bank president, bought it in 1949 and hired his son, Jesse Blayton Jr., as station manager. - Metadata URL:
