- From such fortifications as this earthwork in front of Atlanta, Confederate general John B. Hood defended the city from Sherman's attack. Sherman bombarded the city for five weeks, but Hood did not order an evacuation of Atlanta until all rail lines leading into the city had been destroyed.
Photograph of earthworks, positioned outside Atlanta, Georgia, taken by George N. Barnard, September 1864, after Confederate troops had evacuated the city to escape Union general William T. Sherman's forces. Several cannons stand behind the earthworks. A tent stands on the left. The earthworks were positioned in front of Atlanta to defend that city from Union troops during the Civil War. Barnard, the official photographer for the Military Division the Mississippi, took many photographs of battlefield remains in Atlanta. - Metadata URL:
