- The Cotton Exchange, established in Savannah in 1872, did not get a permanent home until 1886. The building on Bay Street, known to Savannah residents at the time as "King Cotton's Palace," was designed to stand out from its neighboring buildings as a symbol of cotton's importance to the city's economy.
Photograph of the Cotton Exchange, established in Savannah, Georgia in 1872. The Cotton Exchange did not get a permanent home until 1886. This three-story brick structure embodies the Romanesque Revival architectural style. A wide arched entrance is framed by symmetrical windows, and an adorned brick peak rises from the top of the building's facade.
