- Encyclopedia article about Lachlan McIntosh, who was a member of a prominent eighteenth-century Scottish Highland family that was among the earliest settlers of the Georgia colony. McIntosh played an important role in the cause of American independence. He distinguished himself in a career that evolved over three critical periods in the state's early history--from colonial to revolutionary to statehood. McIntosh County, on the Georgia coast, was named in honor of his family.
