- Encyclopedia article about the Georgia Civil War Commission. The Georgia Civil War Commission was formed by the General Assembly in 1993 to coordinate planning, preservation, and promotion of structures, battlefields, and other sites associated with the Civil War (1861-65). The commission consists of fifteen volunteers appointed by the governor, lieutenant governor, and Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives.
