- Description:
- Ignatius Poultney Garvin was a member of the first graduating class of the Medical College of South Carolina in 1825. (Today it is known as the Medical University of SC.) As the premier medical school in the U.S. at the time, Dr. Garvin attended one term of lectures at the University of Pennsylvania before the establishments of MCG or MUSC as evidenced by this notebook. Dr. Garvin established his medical practice first in Waynesboro, GA and contributed two articles in the first volume of the Southern Medical and Surgical Journal. In 1828 he was appointed to the board of trustees for the Medical Academy of Georgia which later became the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Garvin joined the faculty of the Medical College of Georgia in 1839 as the professor of Materia Medica and Therapeutics. Beginning in 1845 he served as either co-editor or editor of the Southern Medical and Surgical Journal for a few years. He was the dean of the Medical College of Georgia from 1857 to 1861 and served as secretary to the board of trustees and to the faculty at various times. He was married to Dr. Milton Antony’s daughter Sarah Ann. He retired from the Medical College of Georgia in 1867 and passed way in 1880. The pages of the lecture notebook are hand-numbered. An index of the subjects begins on page 163 of the PDF.
The notebook indicates that the notes of Dr. William Gibson’s lectures, University of Pennsylvania, 1822-1823, were taken by John Emerson and copied by Ignatius P. Garvin. - Metadata URL:
