Dr. Mary Kate MacMillan Hires did a pediatric internship at the University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia before working at the Ware County Hospital and setting up a practice in Patterson, Georgia. In 1939 she became the college physician at the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. She joined the staff of physicians at the Central State Hospital in Milledgeville in 1949.
Dr. Hires retired from the Central State Hospital in 1969 and returned to Blackshear. Her husband, John Shelton Hires, died in 1954. They had two sons. Dr. Hires passed away at the age of 93 in 2000.
Dr. Katherine McMillan Hendry married her classmate Dr. William Hendry shortly after they graduated from MCG. Both Drs. Hendry interned at the Columbia Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. They returned to Blackshear where they joined the medical practice of Dr. George Hendry, William’s father.
A hospital opened in Blackshear in 1953. Dr. Katherine took an anesthesia course in Chicago and worked at the Blackshear Hospital as an anesthetist until she retired in 1978. In later years, the Hendrys divorced, but Dr. Katherine remained in Blackshear. She passed away at the age of 98 in 2010.
