- This is a transcription of an audio-recorded interview of Dr. Kathleen Byers-Lindsey conducted by Lynda Lee Carlisle and Claire Hicks as an independent study project during their fourth year as medical students at MCG on October 10, 1984.
After graduation, Dr. Byers-Lindsey did an internship at the Flower-Fifth Avenue Hospital of New York Medical College. She completed a two-year residency in anesthesiology at New York’s Bellevue Hospital under Dr. Emery Rovenstine.
Dr. Byers-Lindsey accepted an anesthesiologist position at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta in 1947. At the time, she was Atlanta’s first female anesthesiologist. In 1952, she became one of the first female anesthesiologist to be certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology in the nation.
Dr. Byers-Lindsey retired from full-time clinical practice in 1968 but continued to work in an administrative role at the Atlanta Veteran’s Administration until 1982.had two children. Dr. Byers-Lindsey passed away at the age of 95 in 2012.
