THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ACADEMIC MACE
AND THE OFFICIAL MEDALLION
Observing the centuries.old convocation procedures, each Marshal in the Savan-
nah State College Academic Procession carries an official mace which is indicative
of the power, dignity, and magisterium vested in the College. The mace is a club-
shaped staff which originated in the Middle Ages as a weapon. Eventually, it gained
a ceremonial character and is presently employed most often by legislative forums
and academic enterprises.
The official mace of Savannah State College was designed and made from ma-
hogany wood by Mr. Ernest S. Brown, Instructor of Industrial Arts. Dr. Lester
B. Johnson, Head of the Department of Engineering Technology, designed and built
the Mace Stand.
It is significant to note that the mace bears the official seal of the College and
the motto of President Prince A. Jackson, Jr., "Lux Et Veritas" ("Light and Truth"),
which is his conception of what Savannah State College should be, must be, and is
to all individuals associated with her. Dr. Jackson also wears a silver medallion
which bears the official seal of the College and symbolizes the Office of the President.

lifitmrjmsij^ Alumnus/ Alumna Award
Savannah State College, on July 1, 1974, established The Cyrus G.
Wiley Distinguished Alumnus / Alumna Award to recognize outstanding
Savannah State College alumni who have shoivn tremendous support and
loyalty to the College and to show her appreciation for those alumni who
become shining examples of the lofty ideals espoused by the institution and
to recognize the achievements and contributions of such distinguished alum-
ni. Nominations for these awards are made by a select group of faculty,
staff and students who carefully screen each nominee or candidate before
the final recommendations are submitted. The award commemorates Cyrus
G. Wiley, the second President of Savannah State College and the first alum-
nus to become President of the College.
The Cyrus G. Wiley Distinguished Alumnus/ Alumna Award is the
first honor of its kind to be given by Savannah State College to outstanding
alumni and will not be given indiscriminately . To qualify to receive this
award, the graduate or former student must have a strong commitment for
providing continuous support to the College. The recipients must be in-
volved in working for the improvement of their Alma Mater and in stim-
ulating others to support her both morally and financially. The honorees
must also be involved in community affairs and efforts designed to gen-
erate the betterment of mankind.
The College will recognize recipients of the Cyrus G. Wiley Distin-
guished Alumnus/ Alumna Award at Commencement Convocations.

RUBY LEE KING, Preparatory Diploma, 1931, Normal
Diploma, 1933, B.S., Georgia State College (now Savannah
State College) , 1939, M.Ed., Atlanta University, 1951, Spe-
cialist in Education degree, Columbia University, 1961:
With unlimited warmth and great zeal, this distinguished
daughter has served Savannah State College and educational
enterprises in the Coastal Empire of Georgia with equal
dispatch. Miss King served as a classroom teacher in Evans
County from 1933 to 1935 and in Chatham County from
1936 to 1974, with her last years of service being rendered
at Florance Street School, which honored her as "Teacher
of the Year," along with the Unique Dolls Socio-Civic Club,
Incorporated of Savannah. The Savannah State College
National Alumni Association, Asbury Methodist Church,
the NAACP, the YMCA Membership Drive, and Zeta Phi Be-
ta Sorority, Incorporated have been the prime beneficiaries
of her dedication and talent: she has consistently held high
office in all spheres and has served as secretary of the
Savannah Chapter of the Savannah State College National
Alumni Association since 1952. Unanimously, her fellow
graduates agree that she most sincerely deserves this, their
ultimate accolade.
JOHN WESLEY MCGLOCKTON, Diploma, Beach-Cuy-
ler High School, Savannah, Georgia, 1931, B.S. (Agricul-
ture), Savannah State College, 1935: the Alumni Associa-
tion, the SSC faculty and student body, and the Savannah
community all have shared copiously and fittingly in
the achievements of this humble and dedicated alumnus.
Neither the demands of the civic arena nor the rigors of
a hectic daily schedule have diminished the scope of the
activities of this loyal son of Savannah State College. Mr.
McGlockton is married to the former Miss Lennie Gordon
of Sandersville, Georgia, and he is the father of two daugh-
ters: Yvonne and Barbara, both of whom are graduates
of Savannah State College. He also has two grandchildren.
Our honoree has been the perennial fiscal toiler and main-
stay of innumerable and key committees, striving in the
interests of this College. We, therefore, delightedly extend
to him this supreme salute in behalf of all alumni of this
great and hallowed institution.
NORMAN B. ELMORE, SR., Diploma, Beach-Cuyler
High School, 1937, B.S., Georgia State College (now Sa-
vannah State College, 1941, M.Ed. (Educational Adminis-
tration and Supervision), Atlanta University, 1950, Spe-
cialist in Education degree, New York University, 1962:
Acclaimed in his profession and distinguished in educational
circles in Georgia and the Southeast, this multidimensional
son of Savannah State College brought his pioneering ways
to the Savannah State College National Alumni Association
and the Savannah community at-large. A precedent-setting
member of many influential circles in Savannah, ofttimes
an officer of the Alumni Association, the American Red
Cross, the Boy Scouts of America, GTEA, GAE, CCTA,
CAE, the Savannah State College Athletic Association,
YWCA, NEA, and the National Association of Elementary
School Principals, and a persistent chairman of vital alumni
committees. A member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity,
Incorporated, Phi Delta Kappa International Fraternity in
Education, and the First Jerusalem Baptist Church of Sa-
vannah, Mr. Elmore is indeed an alumnus for all seasons.
Having served as a principal in Jenkins County, Georgia
from 1941 to 1949, our honoree served as chairman of the
Department of Biology at Beach High School from 1949
to 1953, prior to being named a principal by the Savannah-
Chatham County Board of Education in 1953, serving suc-
cessively at Maple Street and Robert W. Gadsden Elemen-
tary Schools and currently at the Florance Street Elemen-
tary School. Mr. Elmore is married to the former Miss
Pauline Elizabeth Williams of Savannah and he is the father
of five children: Norman Benedict, Irene E., Charles J.,
Paul J., and Clara Benita, all of whom have attended Sa-
vannah State College. He is also the grandfather of four.
It is with glad heart that his fellow graduates now, for once,
extend him an accolade for striving toward the highest good.
CLIFFORD E. HARDWICK III, Diploma, Beach-Cuyler
High School, 1946, B.S., Savannah State College, 1950,
M.Litt, University Pittsburgh, 1959, Post Magisterial Study,
North Carolina Central and Atlanta Universities, the Uni-
versity of Georgia, and the Mott Leadership Institute: schol-
arly leader and administrator, brilliant orator, resourceful
teacher, and compassionate counselor has committed him-
self to the dignity of man, enriched American education,
and lifted the spirit of our whole society. Mr. Hardwick
has enjoyed a wide sphere of experiences, namely: Chair-
man, Biology Department, Alfred E. Beach High School,
1953 to 1961, first Black Supervisor of Secondary Educa-
tion, Savannah-Chatham County Board of Public Education,
1961 to 1968, and Director of Community Education, Sa-
vannah-Chatham County Board of Education, 1970. Since
1970, Mr. Hardwick has served as assistant professor of
Education at the University of Georgia and Director of the
Neighborhood Continuing Education Program of Savan-
nah, Georgia. A few of his affiliations include: St. Phillip
AME Church, the Alumni Association, the SSC TRIO Ad-
visory Board, the SSC ESSA Advisory Board, the St. Vin-
cent's Academy Board, St. Mary's R. C, School Board, the
St. Pius X Center Board, the Red Cross, Phi Delta Kappa
International Fraternity in Education, the Greenbriar Chil-
dren's Center Board, the Boy Scouts of America, the Alpha
Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, and several select com-
mittees commissioned by the Mayor of the City of Savan-
nah, Mr. Hardwick is listed in Who's Who in American
Education, Outstanding Personalities of the South, Com-
munity Leaders of America, and Creative and Successful
Personalities of the World. He has been the recipient of
the Model Cities Recognition, Citizen of the Day and Alpha
Phi Alpha Man of the Year Awards. Mr. Hardwick is mar-
ried to the former Miss Beautine Williams of Savannah, he
is the father of two children, and has been twice honored
as a grandfather. His peers, the members of the Alumni
Association, here honor him for his diplomacy and for his
commitment to just and honest causes.
BENJAMIN F. LEWIS, Diploma, Beach-Cuyler, B.S.
(Cum Laude), Savannah State College, 1952, Post Bacca-
laureate Study, New York University, current enrollee. the
Savannah Branch, the John Marshall Law School: His in-
ventive, ever-probing, and inquisitive mind has led him
into all paths and crossroads of the educational-socio-civic
arena. He has developed the theory over the years that men
and women must have a marriage of fine ideas and solid
opportunities in order to forge new vitas for posterity to
tutor. He has applied the rigorous language of positive
action to all significant fronts and causes with which he
has engaged himself. This point was never more clearly
articulated as he worked for the United States Postal Service
for a period of thirty years, rising through the ranks from
a substitute letter carrier to become the first black super-
visor in Savannah, and then to an appointment as Equal
Employment Opportunity Coordinator for Florida, Georgia,
North and South Carolina, and ultimately as Acting Equal
Employment Specialist in the United States Post Office
Headquarters in Washington, the District of Columbia. Mr.
Lewis has further demonstrated his commitment to change
through his work with the American Legion, the NAACP,
the Association of Directors of the YMCA, the Falcons, In-
corporated, the American Red Cross, the Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity, Incorporated, the Savannah State College Na-
tional Alumni Association of which he is the vice president,
the Frank Callen Boy's Club, and the Board of Directors
of the Savannah State College TRIO Program. His charis-
matic leadership was instrumental to his being named to
the Board of Directors of the Savannah Chapter of PUSH
(People United to Save Humanity) and Chairperson of the
Savannah Area Equal Employment Opportunity Council.
Mr. Lewis is a member of the Saint John Baptist Church
where he serves as a member of the Pastors Aid Club, the
Board of Deacons, the E. 0. S. Cleveland Memorial Founda-
tion. He is married to the former Miss Nadine Cleveland
of Savannah and has one daughter. Benjamin F. Lewis is
an exemplar. It is most appropriate, therefore, that he now
receive this high award from those who are proud to call
themselves his fellow alumni.
JAMES 0. THOMAS, JR., B.S., Savannah State College,
1956, Post Baccalaureate Study, George Washington Uni-
versity (Law), the University of California at Berkley (An-
thropology and Social Science I : He always distinguished
himself as an undergraduate student by his eagerness to
share of himself and his substance and by his ability to
generate rapport and esprit de corps both among his peers
and the faculty alike. James Thomas' talents paved the way
for his being named to the Collegiate Who's Who and his
receiving the Gold Medal of Honor and the Outstanding
Achievement Award while matriculating at Savannah State
College. A veteran of the United States Army, our honoree
has distinguished himself as a Patent Examiner primary
in Organic Chemistry with the United States Government
since 1956. Oftentimes he renders service as a Consultant
on Pesticides and their Effects on Ecology and for the
United States Patent Office, in addition to his serving as
instructor and lecturer for the United States Patent Office,
in addition to his serving as instructor and lecturer for the
United States Patent Office Academy and a member of the
Sub-section on Agriculture of President of the U.S.-U.S.S.R.
Joint Commission on Scientific and Technical Cooperation.
Mr. Thomas also served as Assistant Secretary for Science
and Technology for the Department of Commerce, 1969 to
1971. He is the recipient of many awards, including one
given by the United States Patent Office. He also serves
on many regional, national, and Federal boards, foremost
of which are the Capitol View Development Corporation,
the Federal City Housing Corporation, the District of Co-
lumbia Federation of Civic Associations. Our honoree is
affiliated with the Urban League, the NAACP, the Prince
Hall Masons, and the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incor-
porated of which he is a Life Member. Currently, James 0.
Thomas, Jr. is the President of the Savannah State College
National Alumni Association. He is married to the former
Miss Jackquelyn Seward and he is the father of two chil-
dren. A warm person, a generous leader of men, and an
acclaimed expert in his profession, James 0. Thomas has
been tapped for this supreme honor by all Savannah State
College alumni. Because he is held in such great esteem,
they extend to him this high honor and recognition for his
being "yeoman of the guards."

Savannah State College, on March 25, 1972, established The Major
Richard R. Wright Award of Excellence whereby alumni, members of the
community, and corporations are chosen by a jury appointed by the
President to be honored for outstanding repute as leaders in their respec-
tive fields of endeavor. Nominations for the honor are made by the
alumni, the student body, and the faculty. The Award commemorates
Major Richard R. Wright, the first President of Savannah State College.
To qualify to receive this Award, an alumnus, a member of the com-
munity, or a corporation must have worked constructively to change the
pulse of the community for the better. The parties cited must have used
innovative approaches in opening new avenues of awareness for the in-
dividual and society as a whole. The honorees must have utilized
scholarly means which address the needs of the public and attempt to
improve the human condition. Recipients of this Award must be eclectic
thinkers who have proven themselves able to transcend the false pride
that tempers self-aggrandizement.
The Major Richard R. Wright Award of Excellence will not be given
injudiciously. Those parties that receive the Award will be noted for their
expertise in social, educational, and civic arenas.
The College will recognize recipients of the Major Richard R. Wright
Award of Excellence at Commencement Convocations.
Since the Board of Regents does not allow any of the state colleges to
confer honorary degrees, this Award is given by Savannah State College
in lieu of them.

BEN TUCKER, poll-winning bass player, publisher, com-
poser, innovator in musical terminology, and present owner
of Savannah's WSOK Radio Station, is a native of Nash-
ville, Tennessee, who may be rightfully identified as a ne-
ologist in musical composition. The son of a poor family
from the Volunteer State, Ben Tucker forged ahead in spite
of family pressure to become one of the top ten bass players
in the country, and to gain international recognition for
the award-winning jazz composition: "Comin' Home Baby."
Erom these two-pronged experiences, he learned a valuable
lesson: in order for one to survive in this world, he/she
has to know something about economics or else facing sink-
ing into nothingness.
Realizing that Black-oriented radio stations were often
shortchanging black people and that black people were
entitled to more than just rhythm and blues and gospel,
Ben Tucker nurtured the idea of one day owning a radio
station that would address itself to economic, political, re-
ligious, civic, and newsworthy foci of interest to black peo-
ple on four fronts: local, state, national, and international
scenes. Todav, this dream has come true as Ben Tucker
tutors the black community via Radio Station WSOK in
Savannah, Georgia.
Mr. Tucker is a member of the Savannah Chamber of
Commerce, the Board of the Chatham County Retarded Chil-
dren's Association, the Red Cross, the NAACP, and the
Saint Matthew's Episcopal Church. He is also Publicity
Chairman of the Savannah Committee on Sickle Cell Ane-
mia.
Mr. President, I present a distinguished Savannahian,
Mr. Ben Tucker to receive the Major Richard R. Wright
Award of Excellence.
President Jackson
BEN TUCKER, you have lived your life according to
the highest ideals of your profession. You have practiced
civic responsibility and economic soundness in the grand
manner. You have served Savannah State College and the
community. For these and other remarkable reasons, I
am happy to present you the Major Richard R. Wright
Award of Excellence.
Assistant Professor Elmore
HOWARD NATHANIEL LEE, a recipient of the bacca-
laureate degree from Fort Valley State College and the
Master of Social Work degree from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill, is a living witness of ones becom-
ing a dropout and being able to regroup himself in order
to render viable service to mankind in the name of goodness
and fair play. Born in Lithonia, Georgia in 1934, Howard
Lee is the subject of a clearly cut and richly deserved suc-
cess story. Ejected from the hallowed halls of Atlanta's
Clark College because of poor scholarship, Howard Na-
thaniel Lee was able to make that all-important comeback
in the halls of academe, the public sector, and the political
arena. He has served as Director of Youth Services, Em-
ployee Relations, and the Office of Human Development at
Duke University, and as an Assistant Professor of Sociology
at North Carolina Central University at Durham.
Ever an energizer of people and of forces, Howard Lee
is a member of the Southern Regional Council, the National
Association of Social Workers, the North Carolina Heart
Association, and the National Conference on Social Wel-
fare. He has received many awards and has written and
published widely on several subjects. He has been awarded
the Doctor of Laws degree by Shaw University, Raleigh,
North Carolina.
A devout family man, Mr. Lee is married to the former
Lillian Wesley of Savannah and he is the father of three
children.
Always a champion of the common man and a promoter
of civic and political responsibility, Howard Lee has three
times been elected Mayor of Chapel Hill, North Carolina,
each time winning the mayoral position by a high margin
of victory.
Mr. President, I present an enforcer of the rights of
man, the Honorable Howard Nathaniel Lee, Mayor of Chapel
Hill, North Carolina, to receive the Major Richard R.
Wright Award of Excellence.
President Jackson
HOWARD NATHANIEL LEE, in recognition of your
courageous leadership, your concern for the common man,
and your devotion to truth and duty, I extend our heartiest
congratulations and best wishes, and I am happy to present
you this token of esteem and to welcome you into the circle
of those distinguished peers who have been given the Major
Richard R. Wright Award of Excellence.

SAVANNAH STATE COLLEGE HYMN
Let us give thanks and praise to Thee,
To our Alma Mater, S.S.C.
Thine honor, pride, and eminence,
We raise in prayerful reverence.
Guide us still from day to day,
Be Thou mindful lest we lose our way;
Help us know that life, short or long,
Means unceasing work for weak and strong.
REFRAIN
Where Savannah meets the sea,
Where grassy plains and palms abound,
Where the flow'rs are gems of loveliness,
There S.S.C. is found.
We adore each beauteous scene and hall,
Our all we pledge to Thee!
In our hearts we'll build a shrine for Thee.
We hail Thee, S.S.C.

ACADEMIC COSTUMES
Modern academic dress has evolved from a type of apparel prescribed by English Medieval
Universities to distinguish their schools from the lay person in dress at a time when everybody
wore robes or gowns. When American colleges and universities desired to adopt some suitable
system of academic apparel a half century ago it seemed best to agree on some definite system
which all might follow. Accordingly, this attire has consisted of the cap, the gown, and the hood,
the latter two now differing according to the degree the wearer has received.
The modern cap, in academic dress has the same design for all degrees; black and square-
shaped with a tassel hanging from the center. However, the color of the tassel usually differentiates
the field of study for which the degree was granted, the gold tassel being worn by doctors or by
presidents of colleges and universities; but it may be added that the black tassel is correct for
all degrees.
The gown, unlike the cap, differs appreciably in design according to the degree conferred
on the wearer. The gown for the bachelor's degree has pointed sleeves. It is designed to be worn
closed. The gown for the master's degree, worn open or closed has an oblong sleeve, open at the
wrist, like the others. The sleeve base hangs down in the traditional manner. The rear part
of its oblong shape is square cut and the front part has an arc cut away. The doctor's gown, worn
open or closed, has long sleeves faced with velvet ; three bars of velvet are midway the sleeves.
The trimmings of the doctor's gown may be black or the color associated with the field of study.
The hood, while not an article of dress, is, however, the most distinctive feature of the aca-
demic attire. It is a black, crow-shaped badge or adornment with an oval opening and worn down
the back. It enables one to quickly determine not only the degree held by the wearer but also the
college or university from which he is graduated. The colors lining the hood and the size and
shape of the hood make this distinction. The bachelor's and master's hoods are three feet and
three and a half feet in length, respectively; the doctor's hood is four feet in length and is made
with a wide panel. Hoods may be worn for only those degrees actually held by the wearers.
Members of the governing body of a college or university, and they only, whatever their
degrees may be, are entitled to wear doctor's gowns (with black velvet), but their hoods may
be only those of degrees actually held by the wearers or those especially prescribed for them
by the institution.
In some colleges and universities, it is customary for the president, chancellor, or chief officer
to wear a costume similar to that worn by the head of a foreign university.
The chief marshal may wear a specially designed costume approved by the institution.
For all academic purposes, including trimmings of doctor's gowns, edging of hoods, and
tassels of caps, the color associated with different subjects as prescribed by the revised American
Intercollegiate Code is as follows:
Agriculture Maise
Arts, Letters, Humanities White
Business Drab
Economics Copper
Education Light Blue
Law Purple
Library Science Lemon
Music Pink
Oratory (Speech) Silver Gray
Philosophy i Dark Blue
Physical Education Sage Green
Science Golden Yellow
Theology Scarlet
At Savannah State College, the lining of the hood has an orange chevron on a blue back-
ground to represent school colors. A faculty member wears the color of his alma mater.
