- Description:
- Bethel AME History of 100 years. Photograph of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (A. M. E.) Church, organized and dedicated in 1901 under the direction of Bishop M. Turner, Elder C. A. Wingfield, Reverend Phillips and a few devoted Christians. The congregation at that time did not have a church building in which to meet, and it is still uncertain where the original members met before the first structure was built. Between 1901 and 1915, Bethel's records show that the church's address changed a total of five times during that fourteen-year period. Between 1901 and 1912, Bethel saw several pastoral changes, including the tenures of Reverend John F. Baker, Reverend Harrison and Reverend Whitfield, though the dates of these tenures are not recorded. In 1915, the original directors Bishop M. Turner, Elder C. A. Wingfield and Rev. Phillips returned to Bethel, and moved the congregation to Palmour Street. In 1936, the church was destroyed by a tornado but was quickly rebuilt. In 1972, Hall County condemned the Bethel A. M. E. church building. In 1974, with the help of a federal grant progam designed to assist urban communities clear and rebuild blighted areas, Rev. Roberson and Bethel A. M. E. members secured its present location at 900 Mill Street. After the death of Rev. Roberson in 1981, Rev. Charles Well was appointed Bethel's pastor.
