- Dick Yarbrough recalls growing up in East Point and attending the University of Georgia studying Journalism. He discusses working in radio and public relations for Bell South. Yarbrough reflects on working for the Olumpic committee and writing a column that lead to his career as a columnist. Yarbrough discusses his political philosophy and his views on politicians. He comments on the political lives of Johnny Isakson, Carl Sanders, Sam Nunn, Joe Frank Harris, and David Scott. Yarbrough discusses the rise of the Republican party and explains his perception of the Tea Party. He reflects on his appointment to the State Ethics Commission. Yarbrough recalls the early role of the Commission as solely filing paperwork and discusses the media's assistance in covering unethical actions by members of legislators. Yarbrough comments on the state of education in Georgia, political advocates for education, and his opposition to charter schools. He also recalls his work on the Olympic Committee. Yarbrough recalls fundraising efforts, the involvement of special interest groups, and the Olympic Park Bombing. He discusses the role of Atlanta as an international city and the criticism that the Olympic games were too commercialized. Yarbrough discusses his passion for painting, his accomplishments, and regrets.
A 1959 graduate of the University of Georgia, Dick Yarbrough is past president of the National Alumni Association and received their highest honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award. He was also named a Fellow of the College in 2009. In April, 2013, Dick Yarbrough announced the creation of the C. Richard Yarbrough chair in crisis communications leadership at the Grady College, the first of its kind in the nation. For the past 15 years, Dick Yarbrough has gained a large following with his syndicated newspaper column which reaches some 600,000 households and more than 1.3 million readers each week throughout Georgia. In March, 2013, Gov. Nathan Deal named Dick Yarbrough to the recently revamped state board of juvenile justice.
