- Robert Lindsay Thomas is a U.S. Representative from Georgia. He was born in Patterson, Pierce County, Ga., on November 20, 1943, and graduated from Patterson High School in 1961. He earned a B.A. from University of Georgia in 1965 and served in the Georgia National Guard from 1966 to 1972. Thomas is an investment banker and farmer. He was elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-eighth and to the four succeeding Congresses (1983-1993). Thomas is a resident of Atlanta and Savannah, Ga., and has served as the Federal Commissioner of the Tri-State Water Compact.

Lindsay Thomas discusses his early life and his education at the University of Georgia. He recalls working unsuccessfully in brokerage before inheriting a farm. Thomas recalls his decision to run for Bo Ginn's open seat in Congress. He discusses his early congressional experience and recalls his friendship with Ed Jenkins. Thomas recalls serving on the Agricultural Committee and discusses boll weevils, Vidalia onions, and agricultural development. He comments on his experience with the Appropriations Committee, the Conservative Coalition Caucus, and the Sun Belt Caucus. Thomas lists the challenging issues he worked on including banning the use of campaign money for personal spending and social security legislation. Thomas discusses his reasons for leaving Congress including partisanship, the leadership of the Democratic Party, and the lack of open committee chairman seats. He discusses his trip to the Middle East and his perception of the War on Terror. Thomas recalls his work with the Olympics in Atlanta and comments on his experience with Robert Woodruff, Billy Payne, and Sam Nunn. He discusses his election to President of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. Thomas comments on Georgia's economic growth and civic leadership, particularly in places such as Sea Island and Savannah. He discusses Georgia's issues with natural resource management and water distribution challenges. Thomas reflects on the role of governors in recruiting industry to the state and his work as the Commissioner of the Tri-State Water Compact.
