- Description:
- Karen Handel discusses her upbringing and her public service career leading up to her 2010 run for governor of Georgia. She talks about her experience as Secretary of State from 2007 to 2010, her identification as a Republican, her strategies for balancing the state budget, her work on voter ID laws, and her attempts to enact ethics reform in the state legislature.
Karen Handel was born in Washington, DC, on April 18, 1962 and grew up in Upper Marlboro, MD. She served as Secretary of State of Georgia from 2007 to 2010, when she resigned to run for governor of Georgia, a bid which was ultimately unsuccessful. She previously held the office of Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners. Prior to elective office, Handel served as Deputy Chief of Staff to Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue and Deputy Chief of Staff to Marilyn Quayle. Handel has also served as President and CEO of the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce and worked as an executive with several major corporations. She has held leadership positions in a number of community and civic organizations, including the Governor's Transportation Task Force, the Atlanta Regional Commission's 50-Forward steering committee, and the American Cancer Society.
