- Peter Louis Banks was born in Barnesville, Lamar Co., Georgia, on August 12, 1938. He graduated from Gordon Military College in 1958 and in 1963 graduated with a law degree from the University of Georgia. While earning his law degree he worked as a congressional intern for U.S. Representative John James Flynt, Jr. from Georgia. After graduating from law school, he worked as an attorney for the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. He was elected to the Georgia Senate as a Democrat in 1974 and served for four years. In 1978 he ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Congress, losing in the Democratic primary to Virginia Shapard. He was elected mayor of Barnesville, Georgia, in 2007.

Peter Banks discusses his early life in Barnesville, Georgia, during World War II. He recalls attending Gordon Military High School and the University of Georgia law school. Banks discusses his work for Jack Flynt as a legislative intern in Washington, D.C. He recalls working with Senator Richard B. Russell and state senator Paul Broun. Banks explains his duties in Representative Jack Flynt's office and recalls the constituent services he performed. He recalls working with the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Atlanta Gas Light Company. Banks discusses his campaign for Georgia Senate in 1974. He discusses reapportionment, his committee appointments, and the influence of Zell Miller's decision to create a committee on committees. Banks reflects on the relationship between Miller and Speaker Tom Murphy, balancing the budget, and the nonpartisan state of the senate. He discusses his friendship with Hugh Gillis, Roy Barnes, and Pierre Howard. Banks reflects on his decision to run for Congress in 1978 and recalls some strategies of his unsuccessful campaign. He comments on the public's perception of lobbyists and their actions and the importance of ethics laws. Banks comments on party politics in Georgia and his time as Mayor of Barnesville.
