- Description:
- Ted Turner was born in 1938 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He moved to Georgia when he was 9. He received an honorary degree in Economics from Brown University before returning to Georgia, where he became the general manager of his father's advertising company. At 24, he became the CEO of the company following his father's death, and turned it into a multibillion-dollar global enterprise by buying radio stations, and later, TV channels. He would eventually form a "super-station," called the Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) and in the 1970s he founded the first 24-hour cable news channel, Cable News Network (CNN). TBS merged with Time Warner, Inc. in 1996, with Turner as vice chairman and head of both divisions. He's written several books, won several awards, and is largely considered one of Atlanta's most famous and successful sons.
In this interview, Turner explains why he chose Atlanta for his news network despite the disadvantages of Atlanta's location and name recognition at the time. He discusses the importance of having a news network with a Southern and Middle American perspective to counter the Northern slants of other news networks. He describes the commonalities between transportation and communication in forming Atlanta, and his impressions of and involvement in Atlanta politics. He discusses his work in the sports industry, his involvement with the Braves, the Hawks, and the growth of Atlanta's sports. He talks about the importance of protecting the environment, his work protecting the bison, and his charitable donations towards environmental protections. Finally he gives some advice to the Atlanta business leadership. - Metadata URL:
