- In the past eight years--1960 to 1968--Metropolitan Atlanta has grown outward in all directions. The growth pull, however, has been much stronger in some directions than in others. Especially has there been a strong pull to the north and east which, taken together, attracted a population gain of more than 183,000 persons. Relative population gains in various parts of the metropolitan region are depicted on this map. The center octagon roughly approximates a 37-square-mile area which, prior to 1952, was the City of Atlanta. The radial bars represent suburban population growth in eight directions our from the old city.
