- In the 1960s, the seven-county region grew outward in all directions, with the north and east attracting the greatest number of persons, approximately half of the net increase in the region. Since 1970, the south and west show signs of competition for a larger share of the new growth. Relative population gains in various sectors of the region are shown on the map. The center octagon roughly approximates a 37-square-mile area which, prior to 1950, was the City of Atlanta.
