- Description:
- Typescript mailed to Franklin Abbott (Atlanta, Georgia). Poem has separated from envelope. Text: The Coming of the Godbody // I saw the Rhythm of the World rise out of the sea / I saw the waves roll back the sands overturn / the breathing of the tides become a swimmer dancing / I saw the Godbody come ashore on the Coast of Miwok // I had gone to the oceanside in despair of earth / despairing of the men who rule and set the rules / men afraid to trust afraid to be loving / but quick to abuse condemn and slaughter // Then I saw the Swimming Dancer leap upon the sand / rippling everything in the wind of his motion / The cliff the tree the cloud the Mountain / all pulsed in harmony with the flow of his running // I ran after him ran toward his wide-reaching arms / Swept into his embrace I bumped into a multitude / Heroes brutes and slaves the busy lovers of mortality / all jiggled or lagged there in his stumbling train // Keep in step! he cried Keep in step with the cosmos / On your toes is the secret of the whole ballet! / I am your choreographer from before the beginning / your star performer till the end of tempo // When he had swept away and left me swaying behind him / I knew he was the body containing all bodies / On Coast of Miwok I had met my dancing master / And the music of his dance makes the singing of of [sic] my days.
