- The Atlanta Feminist Women's Chorus began in 1981 when, influenced by a transplant from San Francisco, ten to 15 women came together to sing. In 1982, Linda Vaughan became the Chorus' first director. The Chorus never held auditions, believing that anyone who wanted to join should be allowed to sing. As a result of Vaughan's leadership and its policy of inclusiveness, the Chorus quickly outgrew its practice space which had been in personal homes, and moved to the First Existentialist Church for rehearsals and performances. For close to 30 years, the Atlanta Feminist Women's Chorus performed concerts in Atlanta and throughout the country, and during that time it developed a devoted fan base. It also served as a rallying symbol for the LGBT community in Atlanta and the Southeast.; In early 2009, the adverse economic situation forced the Chorus to cease operating. The remaining Chorus assets were transferred to the Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus with the understanding that they would be used to seed a new women's/lesbian chorus in the future, when economic conditions might allow.
