- Envelope description: American Thread Mills; Dalton. Date on envelope should be July 12, 1943. One negative marked "Mr. Langley 1943." The 1943 Lane Brothers Assignment Book (p. 108) describes the project: "July 12, The American Thread Co. Dalton, Ga. Mr. Julian M. Langley, General Manager. 35 photos Army and Navy "E" award, 9 prints to Jennings Whitener -- $105.00; Dalton Citizen, Dalton, Ga. -- $9.00; 13 prints Mr. Riemer, Daily News Record -- $13.00; 35 duplicates -- $35.00; Expenses covering assignment -- $15.00; Less 15% of $162.00 -- $24.30 to Bob Scott." The assignment photographer is listed as "J.H." Lane. The U.S. Ward Department Circular No. 228 (1942) describes the "E" Award: "Army-Navy Production Award. 1.a. The War Department and the Navy Department have agreed to make a single award to individual plants which have achieved outstanding performance on war production, to be known as the Army-Navy Production Award. b. Hereafter the Army-Navy Production Award will be presented plants doing outstanding war production work, and awards of the Navy E, the Army A, and the Army-Navy Star will be discontinued. 2.a. The award will consist of a pennant for the plant and emblems for all employees in the plant at the time the award is made. These will be paid for by the Department making the award..." The September 1943 issue of the Rotarian (p. 58), confirms that the American Thread Company in Dalton, Georgia, won the prestigious award, with Rotarian Julian Longley in an "executive position."
