- Description:
- In this recording, President Richard Nixon addresses the attendees of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organization (AFL-CIO) convention. He discussed the effects of the Vietnam War on the American people and requests support from the AFL-CIO for the legislation he recommended to Congress that includes a job development credit and an automobile excise tax. Nixon continues to state that the suggested legislative solutions will bring an increase in jobs accessibility, wage increases, and an end to war. He directly addresses his reasoning for traveling to China and Russia despite those that disagree. In response to a quote from AFL-CIO President George Meany he addresses his intent to do what is best for Americans and shares statistical data that he suggests proves his administrative efforts are helping American citizens avoid rising costs. Nixon concludes with a short personal story that emphasizes a need to work collectively as a nation.
