- Top Photo: "Herman Kenin, Left, President of the American Federation of Musicians (AFL-CIO) stops to chat with Manhattan Borough President Percy Sutton during press conference at Canaan Baptist Church, 132 West 116th Street, New York. Kenin, who represented the AFM at the December 10 press conference, announced the Federation's participation in a new $2 million Harlem building project that will give ownership of the land and building to members of the black community. The Federation furnished second mortgage money for the project, up to $210,000. In a brief speech, Kenin noted that "the concept of keeping money earned buy the people of Harlem in the Harlem community is one that appeals very strongly to the American Federation of Musicians. That's why were interested in participating," he said. "Kenin noted that the unique arrangement, in which the Woolworth Company, Equitable Life Assurance Society(which provided first mortgage money), an investment banking firm, Carter, Berlind & Weill, Inc., and Harlem Freedom Associates, a group of local businessmen, constituted a unique and vital alliance among labor, industry, financial, and community leaders. "The time has long since passed when the needs and objectives of business and the needs and objectives of individuals can be considered things apart," he said. The conference, called by representatives of labor, industry, and members of the Harlem community, announced a unique new program by which, in Kenin's words, the "people of Harlem can begin to reshape the community to their own specifications and desires." "This genuine program of "domestic land reform" involves a unique sale-lease-back arrangement that will transfer ownership of the land and building of one of its major stores to black citizenship. The Federation provided needed second mortgage money for the transaction, up to $210,000." "If more had been asked, we would have provide4d more," Kenin told the news conference. He termed the investment by the AFM consistent with the Union's policy of " conservative placement of the general union funds for the benefit of the Federation's membership, and the continuing desire on the part of our members to give assistance to local community projects, especially those which will benefit citizens in disadvantaged areas."
