- Description:
- Convicts in prison uniforms. The image pictured here is from a photographic print in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Photographic Archives. There are two copies of this image in two other collections: (1) a 4 x 5 inch negative in the Tracy O'Neal Photographic Collection (N64-031_d), and (2) another print in the Stetson Kennedy Papers in the Southern Labor Archives (L1979-37/206). This AJC print was digitized in June 2010. The print caption identifies the photographer as Guy Hayes, whereas the other two images indicate that the photograph is the work of Tracy O'Neal. The print is stamped on the verso with the date of publication: "Apr 27, 1941." The newspaper caption is attached to the verso of the print: "Broken Legs and Broken Promises. These three youths who say they broke their legs to escape 'Beatings and hardships' at the Dallas 'Hell Hole Prison', admit that conditions have improved since Warden Q.E. Worthington took charge in February, but charge the warden broke his own promise of no brutality by whipping Morris Brown'"on general principles'. Left to right they are Buster Masters, 18, of Atlanta; Percy Mitchell, 21, of Macon, and Ed Pressley, 18, of Troup County. Other prisoners are high in their praise of the warden for allowing radios, mail and sale of luxuries within the camp for the first time. -- Journal Photos by Guy Hayes." The print in the Stetson Kennedy Papers is stamped on verso with studio stamp of Tracy O'Neal. A 1983-description of the print says that the verso is marked with a caption for the image. The caption is no longer present on the verso of the print: "These three Georgia lads hamstrung themselves by cutting the tendons of their own legs to avoid being sent out on convict road gangs."
