- The first African American woman to pass the Georgia Bar, Rachel Pruden Herndon (1898-1979) became the first African-American woman to serve as judge in the Atlanta Municipal Court in 1965. When originally published in the Atlanta Journal, the caption of this photograph read, "Judge Pruden Herndon looks over papers: 'There but for the grace of God I.'"
