- Description:
- Newspaper assignment sheet attached to print verso identifies photographer Frank Niemeir: "John Lowery is starting something unusual in the exburbs: a support/advocacy group for gays in rural Georgia. It's unusual because attitudes in rural Ga. are worse than those in Cobb, and gays are even more of a shadow society there. John is one of the few who's come out in public. In his case, he came out at a meeting with folks protesting a gay book. [...] Caption: John Lowery stands in front of the Gainesville library on Wednesday where there was a recent flap over the book 'Heather Has Two Mommies.'" Newspaper caption: "John Lowery turned activist when he made his private life an open book and announced during a debate over 'Heather Has Two Mommies' that he is homosexual." Date-stamped "Wed Sep 15 1993 J C." The Chestatee Regional Library System was originally formed by the three counties Hall, Dawson, and Lumpkin. Hall County (Gainesville) later dropped out.
