- Description:
- Newspaper assignment sheet attached to verso of print identifies the photographer (Dwight Ross, Jr.): "A group calling themselves ACT UP for Aids Coalition to Unleash Power, staged a march to the Center for Disease Control at 11:40 a.m. Monday morning and continued a demonstration and protest in front of the Clifton Road establishment. The protest eventually resulted in what seemed like a dozen arrests. On the left, Ms. Margie Edouard, who is sitting in a wheel chair because of an unknown illness, comforts her good friend Heidi Deming of Austin, Texas. Ms. Edouard says the CDC is not helping her get the diagnosis she needs to determine what she has or what treatment she needs. Ms. Edouard was later arrested and taken across the street to the fire station for processing. At that time I was too far away to get a photo but I noticed that she didn't have her wheelchair but was being assisted in the standing position by two policemen." Newspaper caption taped to print verso: "About 300 people gathered at the Centers for Disease Control Monday to protest its handling of women with AIDS. At left, demonstrator Margie Edouard (left) talks with her friend, Heidi Deming. Ms. Edouard was later arrested, along with some 100 others."
